Kalasin of Conté stood on her balcony and sighed wistfully.

She could almost see all of Corus from where she stood.

She could almost see the exotic Carthaki dancers in the market place. She could almost hear the sound of their bells and jangles; attached to rotating hips, beating ankles, turning necks and flying wrists.

She could almost see the wind pulling at their veils, rendering them even more mysterious, even more wild. She could almost see the big brown eyes sharpened by the layers of Kohl they wore around them.

She could almost see the gulls flying over the harbour. Almost hear the screeches they made as they fought one another for food. She could almost see the seamen shoo them away from rough card games, almost see the fish seller throw a scrap of fish to the foul beasts. She could almost see them fly, white wings spread as wide as they could go.

She almost heard the young washer woman's voice, the girl had a voice to match the palace's professional singer's own. A voice that could make you cry, could make you laugh, could make couples kiss. A voice unrivaled, not that anyone would, it was simply so beautiful.

She could almost touch the vast, never-ending blue skies that soared above her. Almost feel the softness of the white cotton clouds that let the brilliant sun peek through now and then.

She could almost feel the smash of the waves against the rocks, feel the raw power of nature. Almost swim with the fish in the jeweled waters.

She was free.

Almost.
