Disclaimer: I don't own the Animorphs.
This is a challengefic for the drabble challenge on my profile. Completely one-shot. I'm not really into het, so I'm not sure how good/bad this fic is.
Through the Tears
by ferricflame
Jake sat in a shadowy corner of the food court, crying. Just moments earlier, Cassie had broken his heart into a million tiny pieces.

"You never want to aknowledge that there's an 'us,'" she had said. "Only after something really big. It's like you don't care anymore. Even at the school dance..."
"We're not supposed to act like a group. Any new ties linking us together," he had tried to explain. "Security."
"Don't give me that! Everyone could see it, even before the war!" was her reply. "Are you honestly going to tell me that you didn't feel a connection, a spark between us until this war started?" He didn't have an answer. "I felt it! Rachel did! Marco teased you about it! But it doesn't matter now anyway. We're through!" She walked off. Jake sat paralyzed on the bench.

"Mind if I sit here?" a familiar voice asked. Jake looked up and saw his cousin's best friend and brother's girlfriend, Melissa.
"Go ahead," he said. The fact that he was still crying was obvious in his voice. "Where's my bro?"
"He dumped me. I told him I didn't want to go to this stupid Sharing meeting because my parents are way too involved in it anyway, and he dumped me," she said, tears in her eyes.
"I'm sorry," Jake said gently, comforting. "I-" he stopped short. He was face-to-face with Melissa. As he looked into her eyes, he saw everything he hadn't seen in Cassie's. He now understood the spark because, even through the tears, Melissa's eyes were the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
How much does it suck? Honest answer.
