Thunder

It had to rain. Of all nights it could rain, it had to rain tonight. Not that she minded the rain, in fact she loved it, but tonight, in exactly in 15 minutes was her birthday and she wished it didn't rain. It was past almost 2 hours past curfew and Lily Evans was soaking wet and shivering. She reached the Gryffindor common room without being caught and walked in to find that the couch was occupied; James Potter was asleep. She sighed took off her cloak and placed on the armchair and sat in front of the fire staring into flames.

Suddenly she heard a voice, "You know you shouldn't be sitting in wet clothes." Lily turned around to see James awake and sitting on the couch.

Lily smiled and got up, "I know but I like the rain," she said as she sat down next to him.

James smiled back, "Here," he said holding out his cloak.

"Don't be silly. I don't need the cloak."

"You're transparent Lily," he replied as he put the cloak around her.

"Oh," Lily offered as her cheeks colored.

They fell into a comfortable silence as the rain poured outside. Suddenly there was a bought of thunder and Lily jumped. James wrapped his arms around her to comfort her.

"I thought you said you liked the rain," he said amused.

"I do like the rain, but that doesn't mean I like thunder." She said looking up at him.

Their eyes locked. James pulled his eyes away and looked in the opposite direction. Lily sighed. She knew she was punishing herself. She should have gone right up to her room when she came in, but she had decided to stay in the common room for nothing. Lily knew that wasn't the truth. The truth was she stayed because James was there.

"Alright well I'm going to get to bed Lily," James said getting up.

Lily grabbed his hand as he started to move toward the stairs, "Stay, please," looking up at him, "Just for a little while. Then you can go."

James nodded and sat back down. Lily went back to staring at the fire. They sat in comfortable silence and listen to the noise around them. "Happy Birthday Lily," James whispered.

"Thanks James." She said turning her head in his direction and smiled.

"What would you like?" he asked.

"Nothing." She replied. "I don't need anything?"

"Not what you need. What you want?"

"Then I want nothing."

"Okay," James smiled. "Good night, Lils," he said kissing her cheek.

"Good night, James," she said looking up at him. He nodded and she turned her attention back to the fire; listening to him walk up the stairs.

Lily leaned back and put her hands behind her. Her left hand landed on something. She looked back and saw a bouquet of marigolds, carnations, roses, and one lily in the center strung together with a ribbon that said Happy Birthday. Lily smiled and from the landing of one flight of stairs so did James.
