Against the Grain

This thing inside of me is

Viscous

And it won't allow me to

Tell you how I feel

But from the look in your eyes I know

You understand

And will always be beside me

Holding my hand

But sometimes the grip

Loosens

And I see myself slipping

With you knowing it too

You still clasp me

Closer

Refusing to let go

Maybe it would be better for you

If you just did

No longer an ear

For all my misbegotten woes

But a phoenix

Flying free

Rising from my ashes

I hope you

Can shake off all the ashes

From when I tried to follow you

Into the light
