Prologue:
Though it had been years since her excursion to the Labyrinth, years since she had seen Jareth, Sarah remembered it all very clearly. Now, as she sat on her rocking chair talking to her daughter, she relived those moments. Her beautiful daughter, Nadine, was sitting in front of her, enchanted. She was a shy girl of 17, unlike Sarah at that age. Nadine enjoyed reading, knitting, and listening to her mother recount tales of the Labyrinth. She would wake up every morning and share a dream she had about Hoggle and Ludo, and her mother would sit and marvel at the dreams' detail and accuracy. Most of all, Nadine dreamed of Jareth. In her dreams he was often watching her; he would never speak to her or approach her and only viewed her from a distance.
This moment in time, however, Sarah was discussing the owl that had followed her around since her experience. Nadine mentioned that she often saw it and wondered. Sarah knew that her daughter would soon have her own visit with Jareth, as she had received a letter in the mail addressed to Nadine, inviting her to a ball. Sarah was aware that there was nothing she could do to prevent Nadine from attending, but she could at least make sure her daughter was safe.
The screen door slammed shut, and Sarah and Nadine focused their attention to the stranger who had entered-it was no stranger, though. He was short with a wart-y face and a rotund nose. Looped through his belt was a pouch of lustrous bracelets and plastics, things that others might discard. Sarah and Nadine both recognized him instantly.
"Hoggle!" Sarah exclaimed, not surprised at his arrival. "You came."
Her friend smiled and replied, "Of course I came, Sarah. I am your friend, after all." He looked to the beautiful girl that sat in front of her mother. "And this must be Nadine."
Nadine nodded, shy as ever, and gave a timid smile. "Am I going to see the Labyrinth?" Reticent as she was, Nadine was always quite perceptive; she had seen the envelope addressed to her and read it, careful to leave it as it was on the table. She knew that her life was about to change forever.
