Chapter 1
Squirrelpaw padded beside the river. The gentle waves lapped onto the rocks and trout swam gracefully through the strong current. Squirrelpaw pawed at the water, causing her reflection in the water to blur.
"Thunderclan are fools, Hawkfrost…"
Squirrelpaw's years pricked up in surprise as she stared at the three Riverclan cats on the opposite side of the river, standing right in front of her face. Blackclaw drew his lips back into a snarl of contempt. His fur bristled as he glared menacingly at the young apprentice. Mousedung! Squirrelpaw cursed under her breath. I'm really in trouble now!
"You better not steal any fish! They are ours!" Blackclaw hissed. He dug his claws into the earth. Squirrelpaw backed away. Hawkfrost gave Blackclaw a stare before beckoning Heavystep with his tail. He gave Squirrelpaw a friendly smile. Squirrelpaw smiled apologetically back. Hawkfrost murmured, "Don't scare the little apprentice, Blackclaw. She was just playing. It's not like she would swim across and cross the border line, won't she…" Squirrelpaw couldn't help to see a glint of anger, ambition and evil in his eyes. She flattened her ears, who said she was little? She looked up to the broad shouldered and muscular body of Hawkfrost and decided it was not a good idea to talk back. As the Riverclan cats started padding away, she heard someone calling out to her. Turning around, she started walking shamelessly to Dustpelt who was the one calling out her name.
Dustpelt glared at her. Squirrelpaw knew what came afterwards.
