A Small Reminder

It was a temperate Monday morning in the metropolis.

The sound of her patent leather heels was lost

amidst the hoards of nine-to-fivers headed towards their steel prisons.

She slowed to a stop when she arrived at her destination.

The building reached for the sky, even though it would never touch it.

Despite the temperature, she felt a chill radiating from the structure.

While attempting to move her sluggish form, something caught her eye,

a yellow balloon that was falling from the atmosphere.

It hovered above her when she reached up, the balloon descending into her hands.

The almost forgotten scent of rubber and latex filled her nostrils,

while the soft, powdery film danced across her fingertips.

A balloon this bright could make even the most radiant star envious.

Gazing into the balloon, she saw a kinetic, beaming girl laughing and playing.

A smile crept upon her face as she squeezed the stretchy material only slightly,

being careful not to fracture the gift she'd once lost.

Even with tears in her eyes, a wide grin spread on her face.

Showing it to the people walking by.

And even the building seemed warmer now.

She tied the white string around her wrist

while she continued her walk to her job.

She never again went anywhere without her yellow balloon.
