"In this instant,
I want to become an adult
so that I can bring you out
and run away with you."

.

"Natsume . . ."

Her voice echoed in his head, Natsume, Natsume, Natsume. So soft, so fragile. So breakable.

Two fire comets slashed through the clear winter night. They streaked past the lone figure, a scarlet X over the pale white ghost. Missed.

Mikan did not pause in her steps. Her eyes were cast in shadows by the moonlight.

"Natsume . . ."

"Don't come closer." He held up a palm as if to stop her. But his arm was trembling.

And she knew he would never hurt him, even after these five years. She knew that.

"Don't come any closer."

She stopped. They were so close. It would only have taken him five or six steps to reached her, to touch her.

But things were different now.

"You can't leave, Natsume," Mikan said quietly.

Those deadened eyes roused him from his stupor. A coil of fire wrapped itself around Mikan's body, but it was instantly doused by Nullification water. Flames shaped like demonic hands appeared around Mikan and prepared to grab her in a death grip. That, too, was nullified when a tower of water rained down from the sky.

Mikan took a step forward. Natsume stepped back but found himself backed against a tree.

Soft winds whistled among empty tree branches. Natsume felt goose bumps on his skin under his heavy clothing.

He felt anger.

He felt fear.

He felt regret. So, so much regret.

Because, in the end, he wasn't able to protect her.

"Natsume . . . ," she whispered softly. He didn't flinch from her touch when she walked to him and caressed his cheek. He simply stared at her, unmoving, like a statue.

Then she smiled sadly, showing emotion for the first time. Natsume felt his heart being ripped into two pieces. He knew what was coming.

Pheromone Alice, stolen from Narumi, wafted through the air. A peaceful, merciful way to end things. How characteristic of the legendary Alice Thief.

Sleep.

No.

"Don't fight me, Natsume." Her voice was layered with Reo's Voice Pheromone Alice. "I'm here to take your curse away. Don't fight . . ."

He held tight to the orange Alice stone he had always kept beneath his shirt, trying to hang on to his sanity.

"I love you," he gasped out. "I love you, Mikan. I love you, for always."

She didn't so much as blink.

Sleep, his body told him.

No . . .

But willpower alone counted for nothing. Very soon, his eyes were fluttering close. Pathetic.

"I love you . . . ," he repeated with difficulty. "I love you, Mikan. I love you. I . . . I love you. I lo . . . love . . . you . . . I . . . love . . . you . . ."

She said not a word.

"I . . . love . . ."

When Natsume woke up the next morning, there was a single frozen tear on his cheek.

a/n: Much of the story is up to interpretation. Hope this was a good read.
And I just realized I never give happy endings to my oneshots. Strange.
Merry early Christmas, guys~ :D
