Summary: Watching Darcy.
He watched her out of the corner of his eye. She was smiling but not the way she used to before the rape. Darcy's smile used to feel almost ethereal. Darcy seemed unreal- full of optimism and a true love of life. Now, she smiled but it was hollow and fake.
Not everyone could see it but he could and it broke his heart. For a moment she ducked her head and he could see her eyes cloud. That happened every now and then. He assumed she was thinking about the ski trip. He didn't know for sure because they never really talked about it.
Manny seemed to notice because she gently placed her hand on Darcy's- just for a moment. Darcy remained still as if she were frozen in place and time. Then in a flash the clouds in her eyes turned to rage and she snatched her hand away. She glared at Manny and then jumped out of her chair.
He exchanged a look with Manny and followed Darcy out the door. It was a cool night and Darcy wasn't wearing a jacket but she didn't seem to notice the chill. Darcy was power walking down the dark street.
"Darcy!" he called into the night. "Wait!"
Darcy didn't turn around but she slowed to a moderated pace. "Hey," he said when he caught up. "What happened?"
Darcy laughed that horrible bitter laugh she recently adopted. Her old laugh sounded like a choir of angels and it was comforting. This laugh sent chills down his spine. "Nothing." She said sarcastically. She turned her gaze toward him and took his hand.
He followed her silently into an alleyway and she pushed him against the wall. Darcy leaned forward and kissed him. The kiss was hard and unbridled. It was a good kiss but not right. Her hands ran up and down his body. He fought the urges building inside.
"Hold on." He whispered. "What are we doing here?"
Darcy sneered, "You know." She replied and went back to attacking his lips.
He grabbed her shoulders, "Darcy, no." he said. "Not like this. You wanted to wait." He paused and fingered the ring. "You made a promise and it meant something."
She snatched her hand away, "No, the old Darcy made a promise." She took the ring off and let it drop to the ground. "But she wasn't given a choice to keep that promise. So, I am making a decision." She giggled and brushed his hair away from his face. "I am asserting my female power."
Darcy was beautiful and looked like a Goddess in the moon light. He wanted her so badly but not badly enough to do this, not now. He sighed and pushed her away. "No." he told her.
She recoiled as if he had slapped her. "What?" she hissed. "You- You're turning me down?"
"No." he assured her. "Postponing. Darcy, when we do this I want it to be right."
She stepped back and he could see tears in her eyes.
"Fuck you." She spat and walked away.
He watched her go and then he reached down for her ring. He wiped the dirt of it and placed it in his pocket. She used to be the sweetest girl and now she was so broken and lost. One day Darcy would come back and this ring would be waiting for her. So would he.
