I hate my job.

Seriously, you'd think In the whole scheme of things they'd give us a choice. But no they take away even the last shred of choice that we have. Not that I would have had a whole lot of career options being a shifter. Because I'm not to be trusted, not to be given a chance, not meant to have survived.

You see the world in which I live, the government, or "The Light" as they like to be called likes to do "tests" on shifters. From the moment a baby is born they are tested to see if they are a shifter- using various horrific methods. If you are discovered to be one, you are put on a register made to live in an assigned "known" house- so everyone knows who and what you are. Another of The Lights favourite things to do is test shifters limits. They "test" us until breaking point, many don't survive. They say its just a standard precaution necessary for the safety of the people .In other words The Light is afraid of us, afraid we'll take over, and so are the public. So they accept the "tests" and turn a blind eye to any discrimination.

Because of this there aren't many of us left, many are in hiding, the ones that were lucky enough to escape. While the rest of us stayed.

You probably are asking why? Why stay? And the reason is because I have a family. If I left they would have been murdered, as the government exposes them (your family/friends) if you escape as a ploy to make you return, still many don't.

But there is a myth. Its been handed down for generations, that there is another reason The Light fears our kind so much, because of darkness. Supposedly when darkness falls and someone is left alone outside, darkness comes to that person, if they do not have what darkness needs they usually end up dead. Its been debated upon what "needs" is supposed to mean, The light says its evil, that it seeks in people, people to do its bidding. That would probably be more exciting than my job.

So here I sit day after day behind this desk typing up forms for my boss to send to tell people that their home are going to be repossessed by The Light because of unpaid loans and favours, The Light doesn't take kindly to so called "filth" that cant afford to repay the massive interest they pile on top of their loans.

"Susannah." I looked up to find my self staring at my boss- a short repulsive man who has nothing but contempt for me.

"Yes sir?" I asked with about as much indifference as I could muster.

"You can go now, its nearly getting dark, would want darkness to get you now, would we?" he smirked. I could feel anger start rise in me, if I didn't leave soon it would spew out, and I would probably end up hitting him- not that that got me very far last time.

And I replied with a quick: "Yes sir" before grabbing my things and heading for the door.

The last thing I heard as I was shutting the door behind me was my boss mutter:

"Filth."
