A/N at the end of the story

Lily Evans hated dancing.

She had two left feet and would always find a way to injure herself, her dancing partner, and everyone within three metres of her when she tried to dance. That didn't stop her from attempting it anyway. She remembered one evening as a girl when she'd envied her mother's grace as she waltzed with her father in their kitchen.

However, when she fell down the stairs and broke her arm, dancing along to a David Bowie album, she vowed to never dance again. She vowed to resist the temptation and instead practice restraint whenever she felt the familiar sensation of a beat catching onto her.

It had been a year since that vow, and yet, as James Potter held his hand out to her with his eyes full of tenderness, Lily felt her determination to stick to her vow slipping away.

"Trust me Lily, come and dance."

Lily tore her eyes away from the black-haired man, and, indeed, everyone was staring at the exchange between them. Her sister, Petunia, had a smirk on her face and her whale of a husband, Vernon, had a twitchy hand as he glanced at all the wizards and witches around him.

She could say yes and potentially injure either one of them. Or, she could say no and return to her seat, embarrassing them both in the process. Either way, they would be humiliated so, as she placed her hand in his, she decided to have a bit of fun in the process – even if it did mean she'd be spending her wedding night in St. Mungo's.

As James wrapped his arm around her waist and held her close, Lily shut out the world around them and focused on the feeling of his hands on her and the sound of the music playing softly around them. She didn't know how James knew that she loved Etta James but she hummed along to the tune anyway. She didn't trip or slip, she didn't step on his toes, and she didn't injure herself or anyone else as she swayed in his arms.

"And here we are in heaven…For you are mine…at…last…" James' deep voice sang along to the music in her ear as he placed soft kisses against her cheeks, forehead, and lips.

When the song came to an end and James twirled her in a circle, the world spinning around her, Lily Evans decided that perhaps dancing wasn't so bad after all.
