All alone, Jackie sits in the sofa in Foreman's basement. It's a slow summer's day in the year of 1980. She knows Donna and Eric are probably doing something disgusting. Kelso is with Brooke and the baby. Fez is with his new girlfriend. Jackie and Fez broke up in January, after very soon realizing that they were better off as friends. She's glad he found someone new, since he never did stop his perversions while still single. And Hyde. God knows where he is. She knows that he's not working today.
Hyde. She can't help it, but when she's in this sofa, watching this show, in the summer and wondering about the whereabouts of her friends, Hyde included, she can't stop herself from thinking about a few years ago.
Hot, long kisses. Forbidden kisses. With a man she thought she didn't like. And true, he was not really of her standard but it was pretty sexy.
But then, of course, all of the other stuff happened. They fought. He cheated. He couldn't commit. He was distant. He was nonchalant.
This didn't stop her from thinking about all of the many good times. And it was impossible for her to think about all of this without it making her feel very many, confusing things. She wish she didn't knew why it was – but she knew it. It was because she still loved him.
"I was her love, she was my queen, and now a thousand years between.." she hears from the door. She turns her head to see Hyde, who stares at her when he is finally aware of her presence.
"Steven!" she says, smiling. "Are you singing?"
"Ah, shut up" he says, sounding embarrassed and not in the slightest mean. "I've listened to it a lot and... What are you watching?"
"The price is right."
"That again. What thing is it?"
The answer appeared on the television screen. A big diamond ring.
"Why do people pay tons of money for that stuff?" Hyde murmurs.
"It's romantic. Everyone thinks that except poor people."
"Hey. Not everyone can afford that non-useful stuff. And the ring I got you.."
Hyde silences, and looks down on his shoes. Jackie stares him in his eyes – or his sunglasses.
"You got me a ring..?" she asks. Her eyes grow even bigger then they already are.
He tries to think of a response that would make it seem like it wasn't true. He can't.
"Whatever" is his simple response. He's half expecting Jackie to say the same thing, but she still stares at him. He should be annoyed, but actually his reaction is the opposite. Because her reaction gives him hope.
"Steven.." Jackie says. "I never thought you'd"- she somehow find herself speechless.
"You know I did, you know, love you."
"Did?" she asks.
He looks up from the floor, and into her eyes. He wants to know if it's safe or if he is setting himself up to be ridiculed. The expressions in her eyes does not make him feel secure enough to say anything; but secure enough to remove his sunglasses.
"Steven" Jackie says before he can say anything, feeling more confident when she can see his eyes. "I miss you. Or, I miss us."
"Yeah." Hyde begins, trying to find the right words. "Me too" is good enough, he reckons. For somehow, he finds himself not really being able to collect his thoughts.
He stands up in front of the sofa; she sits in it. He joins her, leans forward and kisses her. Not in the hot and heavy way like a few years ago, but softly and caring. A short while after as their lips must separate, they look at each other and smile.
