The most randomest and shortest thing I've written so far. I just had this sudden impulse to write something and Sasuke came out. I suppose you could call it a step in my attempt to understand Sasuke - I'm really having trouble with that. Not much but I suppose this is well and truly the first drabble I've done.
Lost
Sasuke eats breakfast by himself. It's cold and tasteless because it is part of a packet of… something that Sasuke has been eating each day for a week now. He's silent as he eats. He doesn't want to interrupt. He slowly spoons the gruel into his mouth and stares blankly into space where his father's morning newspaper would be propped against the non-existent water jug. His father would be talking about the paper to his wife in the kitchen as she cleaned up the last dishes. Sometimes Father might point out something to Sasuke and tell him about the 'honours' and something similar.
Sasuke quietly leaves the table and deposits his bowl in the sink. There is a clutter of unwashed dishware gathered there. Mother hadn't quite gotten around to cleaning them yet. Sasuke stands there and stares, as if he could see something in the distance. Then he shakes his head violently and turns around. He's going to be late.
He almost walks into Itachi on his way out of the bathroom. Itachi has a towel on his shoulder and he's walking past and asking what's for breakfast. He steps into the light seeping in through the window and sweeps away in a fine shimmer of dust without realising that his little brother is pressed against the wall and is cringing.
With a yell, Sasuke flees. He's bolting past the furniture covered by white sheets and even though his eyes are wide he almost trips on the yellow seal tapes discarded by the door where they once denied access. He's barefoot and the gravel is cutting into his soles, but he keeps running and he really doesn't want to look back because he knows he'll return to a house after school and he's hoping it's not the same one as this morning's because he's tired of being scared and alone.
Sasuke Uchiha is seven years old and he doesn't know where home is.
