Chapter 1
"February 19, 1990-something. A whole new craze was sweeping the nation, Furbies. These little robotic owl-like creatures were so strange, yet everyone wanted them. That is, except me."
C.B. and Lainey sat in the teacher's lounge while C.B. showed Lainey his Furby.
"Like it?" C.B. asked. "I named him Billy."
"That's so stupid," Lainey said.
"Me getting a Furby or me naming it Billy?" C.B. asked.
"Yes," Lainey replied, getting up. "Now if you excuse me, I have a music class to teach."
"Furbies are not stupid!" C.B. shouted. "They're cute!"
"Men don't say that!" Lainey shouted.
Lainey entered the music room to see each of her students playing with Furbies.
"Okay," Lainey said. "No. I'm confiscating your Furbies. You can have them back after class."
"Come on, Miss Lewis!" Felicia moaned. "Why do you have to be so uncool?"
"I'm not uncool," Lainey replied. "I just think these little owl things are pointless."
"After school, I needed to pick up a few things at Kmart. Back then, Kmart was the to-go place before it went bankrupt and had to resort to slogans like 'Ship My Pants' and 'Big Gas Savings'."
Lainey walked through the aisles and put various items in her cart.
"You could get great clothing, discount makeup, the latest hit movie, and potato chips."
Lainey sat in the Kmart Café eating pizza and drinking an Icee.
"And a little café to get a snack."
Lainey found herself wondering the toy aisle.
"They also had great toys that were great presents for distant relatives."
Lainey picked up a Furby.
"And then there were those weird Furbies. Yuck! Actually, this one is pretty cute."
The next day, Lainey rushed into C.B.'s room holding up her Furby.
"Look what I got!" Lainey cheered.
"I was officially on the bandwagon."
