I walk around a bush and that's when I see them. The girl with the braid and the blonde boy. He's limping pretty bad. After a while, they stop and the girl says something to the boy. They both walk off into the woods in different directions. I follow the boy, hoping I might be able to sneak some food while his back is turned. I dart behind trees and crouch under vegetation, but I doubt he would be able to hear me anyway, with that limp of his. I'm surprised the boy from 2 or the boy from 11 haven't found him yet, with all the noise he's making. Eventually he stops and kneels beside a bush. He picks a dark purple-ish blue berry off of it and holds it up to his face.
My breath catches in my throat. Nightlock. A few days ago, I found a bush of mysterious berries. I couldn't imagine why they hadn't been included in the plant identifying exercise in the Training Center. I had camped by the bush for a few hours, waiting for something to come along. Soon, a rabbit came and ate the berries. It had almost hopped out of my sight when its ears started twitching. I ran over to it just as it fell to the ground in a fit of spasms. Once it stopped moving, I checked its pulse. Nothing.
The boy holds it between his thumb and his index finger. He turns it over a few times, then sniffs it. He picks a handful of them, and starts walking back the way he came. I wait in silence, and a few minutes later the boy returns. Trying my best to stay unnoticed, I sneak back to where he and the girl split up. There's a pile of berries, a couple apples, and some cheese. I look around. The girl is no where to be seen.
I grab the cheese and walk a little ways off. I sit under a tree and bite into it. So, the final five. I never imagined I'd make it this far. Its just me, the career boy, the boy from 11, and both from 12. I wonder what would happen if I made it to the final four. Or the final three. Maybe even the final two. God only knows what the Gamemakers might do then. The other four tributes would probably kill each other off, if I give them enough time.
Then it hits me. I'm going to die. If they kill each other, most likely either the boy from 2 or the boy from 11 would be left. If I try to stay hidden, the Gamemakers might do something worse than the other tributes ever could. There is no way I'm making it out of here. They'll kill me. Someone will kill me. No, I can't let that happen. I don't want to die like this.
I creep back to District 12's unguarded food. I take a handful of berries and walk out into the forest. Once there's some distance between me and them, I stop. I hold the berries up to my mouth, take a deep breath, and eat them.
