"Confound it!" Wilson said as his axe fell to the ground, shattered. He glared at the broken flint and wood, seething as overhead the sun began to make it's descent on the horizon. That's it, he was going to die. His torch had burned out the other day and now his only weapon had perished. He looked up at the sky solemnly, the stars just appearing to taunt him with the possibility of hope. Blinking back tears, he took a deep breath.
"Hello!" He yelled across the forest. He was a scientist, and this was humiliating, but surely someone was out there. It had been twelve days since he arrived and he had not seen a single soul. Perhaps it's because they couldn't hear his presence. Mind wavering on the most frazzled of logic, he called again.
"Hello! Please! Is anybody out there!" He yelled at the top of his lungs, his cries disturbing a flock of newly nested birds. Straining his ears, Wilson felt his sanity drop after every second without an answer. He knew Maxwell wouldn't trust him with company, he was too cruel for that. Evil bastard.
"Hello?"
Wilson couldn't believe it. He must be going mad. A faint yet distinct answer to his cries.
"Hello?!" He yelled, the air turning heavier and darker as he pursued the voice, dashing among the trees. Suddenly, a blazing bright light illuminated the trees up ahead as the other voice called out for him. His breath hitched as he never felt so happy. He felt Charlie's breath on the back of his neck as he leapt for the fire, collapsing on the ground in a slightly undignified yet relieved heap. He felt a hand pat his shoulder, then another two help him up. Wait a second...
"Ahh!" he yelled as he stared into the eye, or rather the eight eyes of a female spider beast. Wilson darted away to the other side of the fire as the spider woman looked on in confusion. It was a trap! Wilson knew it, he couldn't trust anything anymore.
"Stay back, you monster!" he yelled, waving a twig in front of him to try and intimidate her. It wasn't working as she simple rolled her eyes at the scientist.
"Honestly, you think I would eat you? Deary, you are very much mistaken." she said, and Wilson jumped in surprise at the monster's ability to speak. She smirked at him.
"Put down your silly twig and come sit," she gestured with a fuzzy hand to the ground next to her, "I won't bite, unless you irk me."
Wilson was very confused, it was probably the fatigue setting in. How could he trust this thing so easily. And besides, he was a man of science and had his dignity to uphold. No way was he going to be murdered by the likes of a spider witch. He stayed rooted to the spot, making an attempt at a menacing glare at the spider woman, who shrugged.
"Suit yourself." she said as she swiftly weaved herself a bed of silk. She was soon completely still, back turned to Wilson who couldn't tell whether she was asleep or just pretending, but he did not like it one bit. As soon as dawn came, he would sneak out with that monster's supplies and be rid of her, no doubt she had a devious and deadly plan in mind. But it would be a long night to wait. He soon sat his weary legs down and decided to wait it out, staring into the dancing flames of the fire.
