Deer's, bunnies, and bears, that what Edward Cullen could smell as he ran around the woods hunting for food. Edward wasn't your normal teenage boy, Edward was a…VAMPIRE! He wasn't normal vampire either though. He, along with his vampire family only fed off of animal blood not human blood.

Just as Edward took down a bear a smell caught his nose. A human smell, a humans blood. He was going to race away from it when he heard the human cry out. So instead he followed his nose. He came across a young woman curled into a ball shaking but there was this strange ball around her almost like a shield. The young woman was crying. Edward realized the blood was coming from her leg. He fought the urge to attack her and slowly knelt down beside her.

"Miss, are you all right?"

"Please don't hurt me please!" the young woman begged.

"It's all right. I'm not going to hurt you. My name is Edward, can I help you?"

"I…I don't know…. I just…I can create this…this shield and…and I…I don't know why."

"She's a newborn…" Edward whispered to himself. "Can you tell me what the last thing you remember is?"

"I don't want to talk about it, it's too upsetting."

"Were you attacked?"

The young woman looked up at him surprised, her shield slowly going down. "How did you know?"

"I just had a feeling. Can you tell me who attacked you?"

"His name was James…. he did something to me and now I have this weird power. I can create a shield whenever I feel threatened or afraid. Mr. Edward do you think you can help me figure out what is wrong with me?"

Edward gave a small chuckle. "Ok, first just call me Edward. None of this Mr., stuff. Secondly I don't know a lot about why you can do what you do but my father Carlisle Cullen can, he can also help heal your leg. If you trust me…I can take you too him."

"How can you know?"

"I just…well I…you see I'm…"

"You're one of them aren't you?"

"One of what?"

"A vampire…"

"Is that what attacked you?"

"Yes, are you one?"

"Yes, but I'm not going to hurt you. My family and I are all vampires but we only feed off of animals blood."

"Can your father really help me?"

"Yes."

The young woman let her shield down and slowly tried to stand up. With a cry of pain she felt back down to the floor.

"I can carry you, if you trust me?"

The young woman gave a small nod. Edward lifted her bridal style and took off running. Before he reached home Bella went limb in his arms. Her heart was slowing down and she was losing a lot of blood. He swiftly bit into his wrist as and held his arm over her lips watching them become stained with his blood red. The girl's body swallowed the blood on its own without thinking and he saw her eyes flutter for a moment but then relaxed again.

Watching her leg intently the wound slowly closed up and her heart beat was normal again but the young women's eyes were still closed. She had lost a lot of blood but she would be okay now. He picked her up easily and carried her bridal style back to his As he neared his house he could hear his families thoughts.

Is that blood?

I need to get out of here the smell is too much!

Alice take Jasper out of here and fast.

Edward is so stupid what is he thinking?

Carlisle, I need your helping. I'm bringing home a vampire. I think she is a newborn.

The young woman stirred. "Where…where am I?"

"It's ok. I've got you. I'm taking you to my house my dad can help you."

The young women just nodded. Edward walked inside and met Carlisle by the door.

"Edward, explain please."

"Dad she has this amazing power, she said she was attacked by a vampire. I think she is a newborn."

"Take her to my office I'll look at her there."

Edward walked through the house into Carlisle's office. He set the women down on the chair.

"It's ok, you're safe. Carlisle isn't going to hurt you."

"Will you stay?"

"If you'd like."

Carlisle walked in and sat down at his desk.

"All right just a few questions. First what's your name?"

"Isabella Swan, but you can call me Bella."

"All right Bella, what happen to your leg."

"I was running and I tripped and fell."

"Edward tells me you can create a shield?"

"Yes, I don't know why and I know it sounds crazy but…"

"No, it's not crazy. He also tells me your were attacked by a vampire is that true?"

"Yes…"

"All right. I'm just going to give you a quick exam and then I'll be able to tell you more." As Carlisle approached her Bella instantly brought the shield up over her body.

"No! Stay away!" she cried out.

"Bella it's ok Carlisle will not hurt you." Edward soothed.

"Please stay with me."

"I will, I'm right here and I'm not going to let anyone hurt you."

Bella nodded and let her shield down. Carlisle did a quick exam and even a few tricks to see if she was a newborn. It took quite a long time because Bella showed no signs of being a newborn. She showed more human signs than anything, yet she was able to create a shield instantly. Carlisle did a lot of work and finally he figured it out. Carlisle looked to the teens and shook his head back and forth. He wasn't the happiest person but he finally has news for them.

"You are a curious one Miss Bella. You aren't a vampire... but everything about you says you should be. I don't understand why. You have all the signs of changing but no signs of being a newborn vampire. Perhaps you could tell us a little more about your attack, to help us better understand what is going on with you?"

Bella gave a small shrug.

"It's ok Bella, you can trust us."

"This man…he called himself James. He bit me, but he heard someone coming and he bit me again and then from there I think I blacked out."

"So he injected her but then took the venom out?" Edward asked Carlisle.

"It's possible, maybe enough blood had already been passed through her system for a small change but not enough for a full change."

"Do you remember what happen when you woke up?

"I was alone in woods. I was scared and wanted to get home. So I started to run, but then I tripped and fell. I couldn't run because my leg was in too much pain so I just sat there. James came back and was going to hurt me but I was able to shield my body. He tried to fight through it but then he heard someone coming so he ran off again. It must have been Edward."

"I don't know how it is possible Bella but I think you are actually half human and half vampire. You don't have the bloodlust and hunger that a newborn would have. You are actually quite calm and well maintained for a newborn…so there is no way you are a vampire."

If Bella was a vampire they would be having trouble keeping her calm and normal but so far things were looking up.

He looked to them again before speaking "You are still a human only you are going to be feeling stronger and have more energy. All in all I don't think that this will be a bad thing. You will just need to learn to control you powers as you get them. I am sure Edward can help you with that."

"Yeah, no problem."

"Great. Do you have any questions for me Bella?"

"What is going to happen to me?" She tried to hide the whimper of fear in her voice but Carlisle and Edward heard it.

Carlisle sighed and crouched down to her level so he wasn't towering over her. "Nothing is going to happen to you. You will feel more energy during the day and you might even be stronger. You are physically fine. There is nothing wrong with you. This is a good thing, think of it as a gift."

"So I am not going to burn in the sun or not be able to have garlic on my pizza?"'

Both men laughed at her question and Carlisle spoke "You can have all the garlic on your pizza that you want to. In fact my wife Esme is making some right now. As for walking in the sun, I don't have an issue with it and I can guarantee you that we will not burn in the sun although Edward does sparkle a bit."

"What are you talking about?"

"Nothing dear. Do not worry about burning in the sun. It isn't possible. The sun won't hurt you."

"Thank you."

"You're welcome."

Carlisle left the room. Bella looked at Edward. "So I have super power? I'm like a super hero or something?"

Edward chuckled. "Something like that. Would you like me help you control your powers?"

"I only have one right now, it's the shield and I can master that was really well."

"It's possible you might get more but until that happens I guess we will just have to wait."

"Thank you Edward…for helping me…and being my friend."

They both gave a small smile.

"You're welcome. Are you hungry? I'm sure the pizza is ready by now."

Bella nodded. "Is Easme nice?"

Edward laughed. "It's Esme and yes she is very nice."

Bella blushed. Edward gave her a hand up and they headed into the kitchen. Maybe her new life wouldn't be so bad. After all she only had one small power, what's the worst that could happen.
