"I love you, mom," said Harry, choking on the lump in his throat. He turned to his father. "I love you too, dad."
"I know you do, son." James Potter had tears in his eyes, as he saw his only son off on the Hogwarts express. The whistle suddenly blew on the train, calling all students to board.
"I have faith in you, Harry," said Lily Potter, hugging her son. "You'll do fine."
"I suppose," Harry managed to choke out. He hugged his parents one last time. "Goodbye." Harry ran to the train, and got on. He didn't trust himself to look out the window at his parents, for he knew that if he did, the ache in his heart would only feel heavier.
Harry let out a shuddering sigh as the train began to move. To his dismay, he noticed tears leaking out of his eyes.
Stop it, Harry, he told himself. You're eleven years old; you shouldn't be crying for your parents like this. Ever since Harry could remember, he had been wanting to go to Hogwarts. But now that he was actually doing it, well… it was just too much too soon.
Letting our another sigh, Harry tried to force all thoughts of his parents out of his mind. What he needed was someone to talk to. Anyone, as long as they would listen to him.
Then, like an angel from heaven, Harry's wish came true in the form of a girl knocking on the door of his compartment and saying, "Is there any room here? Everywhere else is full." Seeing Harry's red-rimmed eyes, the girl sat down across from him. "What on earth is the matter? I'm Hermione Granger, by the way."
"I'm Harry Potter. And I'm okay, really."
"Oh, stop being so noble," said Hermione. "I can tell when something's wrong. What is it? You can tell me."
Harry blinked rapidly, as tears found their way out of his eyes yet again. "It's just my parents. I know, I know. I shouldn't be crying about leaving them because I'm eleven years old, but…" he stopped, and found himself forgetting about all thoughts of his parents as he stared at Hermione. Harry had only just met this girl, and yet…
"Well, that's nothing to be ashamed of! In fact, it's a good thing, it means you love your parents very much. If you didn't, you wouldn't be missing them so much right now. Besides," continued Hermione, "you'll get to see them on Christmas break." Hermione stopped there, and hugged Harry. It was strange how much this girl reminded him of his mother. "I have faith in you, Harry."
There it was again! Hermione had said the exact same thing as Lily Potter had said a few minutes before. And when Hermione had given him the comforting hug, Harry couldn't help noticing her arms felt exactly like his mothers. But there was one way Hermione and Lily Potter were very different: Harry didn't have a crush on his mother.
Hmmm… thought Harry. Maybe this year won't be so bad, after all! Thanks, Hermione.
