He can pretty much gauge her mood by what she's cooking.

She cooks soup or something warm and soothing, when she needs comfort or is especially lonely. She's still so young, and yes, she's a bit of a mama's girl. However, her Mama's out somewhere in the world, living through all the four seasons in its variations. She's also a papa's girl. However, right now, her Papa is...just simply not an option. Tsubaki is certainly the next person to help Maka out of these sort of slumps, as the two are close. Not to mention, Soul has learned that Tsubaki is the most maternal of them all, and is very soothing to Maka's otherwise distressed state. But Tsubaki sometimes is a little occupied with Black*Star, given how problematic the latter can be. Though it doesn't really matter. Maka doesn't like troubling others - or rather, what she thinks is troubling - so she's not about to blatantly or directly look for any consolement.

She makes desserts when they conclude exams. It's because when it is exam time, she doesn't indulge in sweets or any other snacks. She tries to eat healthy during that time, which means snacks in form of sliced carrots and celery (rabbit food), along with fruits. However, because she's working so hard - she never actually really eats as well as she could; sometimes, she skips meals. Somehow, her body and her health survives (mainly because he is there to nag her to eat. She's so careless.) So she makes desserts after exams, as a celebratory treat. He's not complaining.

She and Tsubaki together make a feast a weekend before exam study weekend. This is mainly so they don't have to worry about cooking meals during exams - and instead, can just have already prepared food that only requires heating up throughout the week. Tsubaki needs help cooking enough food for Black*Star, as he eats even more when he's "studying" (mainly, he burns so many calories performing his Punishment Game). It's also a stress coping mechanism. She makes food when she is stressed. Actually, she shares this particular situation with him. Except, he doesn't make food when he is stressed. He eats it.

So. She cooks. Tsubaki's the superior cook, of course, but she's decent. She may fudge some recipes, but hey - he's not complaining as long as it's edible. And, not that it's because she's a girl or anything like that, that she can cook.

Because, really, he can, too. The house cook - or, at least, the one that spanned from ages three to eight - taught the Evans sons the basics of cooking. He remembers Wes having to get the stool for him in the earlier years, when he was particularly short, just so he could watch Wes over the counter - enticed by the movement of blade slicing tomatoes, thyme, ginger, and the like.

(Then he remembers Wes being enticed by the movement of his little brother's arm, becoming a blade, and slicing through the air in an awkward motion.)

So. She cooks.

But his favorite mood of hers?

When she makes feasts, for their house celebratory parties. Everything offered at the party is what each and every one of them enjoys. Everyone is not allowed to go home hungry.

And, it shows her contentment. Her comfortableness, bliss, being in such close company. To have some peace and general serenity, in their otherwise hectic and discordant lives. Even if there is more rowdiness and boisterous personalities than any halcyon moments. (He's noticed Black*Star hams it up even more during such festivities, just to both irritate and amuse Maka.)

She's happy. He's happy. They're happy. And it's good times, all around.
