Introduction - Birth of the Serpent
It shone, pale as bone,

And I thought to myself how the moon,

So there he was, nearby his love's body, while the battle raged outside still, with full power and with such heat, that Kaidu thought the thin balance between love and hatred was gone for good.
She was his entire bloody life, and as such for an extremely sensitive 16 - year old waterbender, it all suddenly seemed to be too much for him, almost dragging him to a homicidal situation which he simply loathed.
And so he gained his title, "Serpent of the North", at the Siege of the Northern Water Tribe, where the princess of his folk, Yue, had sacrificed herself to become moon spirit.
Kaidu would never accept this title though, he didn't deserve it, he didn't gain it through righteous means; 'twas just a moment of frenzy that gained him this title.
He was always a peaceful sort, keeping his mind sharp and calmness at heart, he was the only student that stood out for longest against Katara while he was dueling with him. Those were the good times, when he was Master Pakku's student. He was also the only one who didn't mock Katara and her waterbending prowess, while his other friends mocked her just because she was a woman.
He was quite the out-of-the-ordinary guy, who had a knack of understanding that even the best could be beaten. He never underestimated anyone, and tried to learn as much as possible form his friends and foes alike.
After the death of his bride-to-be, Kaidu, with all the grief and anger he gathered, had created a twister of water around himself, and turned it into a serpent-shaped water elemental. After then, he got inside of the elemental, controlling its limbs and power as his.
Just like the Avatar joined with the Ocean Spirit, Kaidu unleashed his bending prowess to the unlucky soldiers, by simply spraying waves of waters at the fire nation navy from his mouth and other limbs. Those tanks couldn't even stood a chance against such power.
That was before Princess Yue "transformed". And it actually scared the hell out of both the fire nation AND the water tribe.

Who was the beloved of Kaidu, they were getting married next Autumn.
Unfortunately for him, he of all people knew this: Destiny is a funny thing.
You could never know when you may abandon calmness and peace, replacing it with anger fueled by grief.
She was dead, killed by a murderous fire nation soldier.
He avenged her, but saw himself, turn into a serpent.
Only for this time, revenge WAS the answer.
