Thank You
Death Note Oneshot
Summary: After they die, Matt and Mello remember how Llana was there for each of them and realize how much of their thanks she deserves.
"She was right you know."
Mello grumbled as he swung his leg over the wall of the abandoned church, "Yeah yeah. Whatever, she was a nag."
Matt shook his head with a quick unfeeling chuckle, "Either way…she was right. We're dead."
"Don't remind me."
"About what she said to me, before we decided to do this…"
The blonde cursed lightly when he reached into his vest for a cigarette, remembering ghosts couldn't smoke, "Let me guess. Something along the lines of I love the both of you and I don't want to see you die because of something stupid."
"You are correct my friend."
Mello grunted, "I wish I could have seen it."
"Seen what?"
"Her reaction. Part of me wants to know how she took it."
Matt looked out at the sky as a few birds flew past, "I bet she broke down. Do you remember what happened when I fell down the steps when I was five?"
Mello smirked, "Her scream could have shattered the windows."
"She was so mad at me. She yelled at me for an hour but cried the whole time, and slept with me all night." The redhead was still staring at the sky, now with a smile on his face.
"How about when I cut myself with the kitchen knife that time."
Matt laughed, "Oh yeah. Trying to get that chocolate cake that L gave to you anyway."
The blonde shook his head, "She stole Rodger's car just to take me to the hospital. She thought I would bleed to death in an ambulance."
The two friends sat in silence for a while, still thinking back on their all too short lives. Matt moved his goggles down around his neck so Mello could see his blue eyes, "Mihael, do you think that we'd still be alive? I mean, if we had listened to her?"
He didn't want to admit it; all of his selfishness and wanting to beat out Near is what got him killed, got them both killed. "Yeah. We'd be alive."
Matt tugged on his goggles, an unintentional gift from Llana, "She told me to be my own person. I think part of her knew that following you around would get me killed."
"I know. She told me to leave you out of it."
The other young man reclined on the church roof, "It was my choice though. I don't blame you."
Mello nodded, "Thanks. You know what Mail? We should thank her."
Matt chuckled, "Right, we're going to apologize to a living person. Like she's not already mental."
The blonde hit his friend, "Shut up and look." He said pointing below them.
The black SUV that pulled up was small with Japanese Police tags. As the driver side door opened a man stepped out, followed closely by a little girl climbing from the back and a woman from the passenger side.
Llana sighed as she looked up at the abandoned church where Mello died and where she laid Matt. Nothing of Mello had been found except his rosary when the fire was over and she wore it around her neck. Her daughter, Layla, was never seen without her uncle Matt's goggles and most prized video game.
The woman held the flowers close to her chest as she approached the headstones she had put in for her family, and stopped when she saw the rose between the two. On the left was Mihael Kheel, and on the right, Mail Jeevas.
Matt put a hand on his friends shoulder, "Do you think she'll understand?"
Mello nodded, "She better."
Llana smiled as she picked up the rose and placed her flowers in it's place, "You're welcome. And I won't say I told you so."
Matt laughed, "Now we get to go listen to L actually say I told you so."
Mello rolled his eyes, "He's one to talk."
