Sometimes what they did to the children didn't turn out as well as they expected. We didn't all end up like L.
There was a building for those who were less fortunate. Children were piled in, one by one. There were five rooms. Sometimes there wouldn't be enough rooms for the children, then an extermination would take place. We were used to them, so there was never a fuss. Usually, there wasn't much crying.
Only those sent to the asylum part of Wammy's House were given names.
They weren't even names. Just letters. They didn't deserve full names. They weren't even humans, as far as the surgeons were concerned.
Although the main reason for this, I would guess, was that most of the children didn't have the capacity to either remember a name to respond to. Why else would they be in an asylum in the first place?
There were five groups of children in all; and as they went into the alternate building, they were given their letter.
Despite their brilliance, if there were any bad side effects from the operations, they were sent out of the orphanage and assigned a letter.
Sometimes it would take months for the children to be operated on, while others underwent surgery as soon as they arrived at the orphanage.
The results were usually devastating, but interesting as well. The doctors would use different techniques every batch or so of kids, and if something worked (as in it didn't leave the child with terrible side effects), they would try to tweak it and make it better, which in most cases would just worsen matters.

I'm not sure why, but the song really reminded me of the Wammy kids...
This was originally meant to be a oneshot, but I'm going to be adding chapters about the characters later xD
This ideas makes /some/ sense.
After all, it was never explained in DN how Wammy's house just happened to get so many smart kids, right?
