"Is that a foot sticking out of your trunk?" asked Ginny. She was on the Hogwarts Express with her brothers. Fred and George Weasley, two of Ginny's brothers, stared at each other uncomfortably. The foot belonged to Peeves, the Hogwarts poltergeist. Peeves had been Stupefied and stuffed in Fred's trunk. For reasons too hard to unpack here, Fred had come up with the idea. George had carried it out. It had miraculously gone according to plan, and now they, Peeves and all, were speeding through the countryside.
But now Ginny had opened the trunk. There was an inert Peeves lying in it. "Is that PEEVES? The poltergeist?" She was appalled.
"Take it easy, Sis." said Fred. "Don't overexert yourself." said George.
Ginny had had a very hard first year and had just in fact, recovered from recent injuries. Fred pointed his wand at Peeves. "Rennervate."
Instantly, Peeves jumped up. With a few words that are still believed to have been "Catch me if you can!", he scurried through the compartment, and collided with the Trolley Witch and her cart full of food. Chocolate Frogs went flying. The Trolley Witch swore loudly. Peeves grabbed handfuls of Pumpkin Pasties, and flew into the next compartment, throwing the Pumpkin Pasties. One of them hit Luna Lovegood, a Ravenclaw first year. She looked up at the thrower of the strange missile, and exclaimed, "Oooh, is that a Crumple Horned Snorkack?"Then she began to chase the poltergeist through the compartment.
Peeves spat a chewed up mouthful of Chocolate Frog onto Draco Malfoy, who sputtered "A poltergeist on the Express! My dad will hear about this!"
Finally, Peeves was in the compartment containing Harry, Ron, (another Weasley brother), and Hermione. Hermione had the presence of find to Stupefy Peeves as soon as he entered the compartment.
Ron was jealous. "How come you get to sneak Peeves on the train? I thought riding an enchanted car was the worst somebody could do!"
Hermione was shocked. She could hardly contain herself. "How in the world did you do that?"
Harry could not say anything.
Finally, the train pulled into Platform Nine and Three Quarters. Fred and George stuffed Peeves back in their trunk. "I hope Mum doesn't ask us about the foot sticking out." said George. "I just wish I didn't revive him." replied Fred with remorse.
