Why? It was the most common asked question. Why do I feel so heart broken? Why couldn't he have chosen me? Why doesn't he love me? Why? Why? Why?

A blast of thunder filled the night sky as rain fell all around them. Two people were standing across from each other, staring at each other. They quickly ran to each other and embraced. Inuyasha and Kikyo… Together? Kagome gasped as she watched from behind a tree. She had decided to follow Inuyasha as he had wandered off after the fire had died down. She had figured since he was always following her it would be ok to follow him for once. Now she wished he hadn't.

How could it? He promised he wouldn't see her again! She collapsed, her body shaking with uncontrollable tears. Her heart felt like it had broken in two. Kagome lifted her head from where it had been resting on her knees. Her face was stained with tears. Standing up, she took a shaky step. Kagome took several more steps until she was in plain sight of them. She stared at the two of them. Kikyo and Inuyasha were still hugging each other. They didn't seem to have seen her yet.

She continued to stand there, waiting until they finished. Finally they parted. Inuyasha at that moment turned and saw Kagome. She looked terrible. Her face was a mess, and her clothes had gotten dirty. She was drenched. His eyes widened from surprise. Had he seen him with Kikyo? She couldn't have! But maybe he did. He quickly pushed Kikyo away from him.

"Kagome…"

Kagome lifted her head slightly, so she was looking at them. Inuyasha had said her name.

"How could you Inuyasha?! You promised me…." She said, after bursting into tears again.

Inuyasha darted over to her, and hugged her. Kagome didn't fight back, but was still sobbing.

"I thought you loved me. You said you wouldn't see her again... You said we…" Kagome couldn't even finish her sentence. Inuyasha pulled away, and held up his hand to her face. He brushed away a tear with his claw. She looked at him, her eyes wide. She looked heartbroken, upset, and lonely.

"I do love you. Kikyo summoned me. She told me she wanted tell me something. I couldn't help myself with the hug. I care about her deeply…. as a friend."

"R.. Really?"

"Yes, really."

Inuyasha hugged her once again, bringing her close. He never wanted Kagome to look like she did now. He said he would protect her from everything. He guessed he couldn't protect her from everything. If this was called protecting her, he was doing a pretty bad job at it. How could he let Kagome feel like this? Why did she have to follow me? he thought.

A single tear rolled down his cheek as he thought. He couldn't protect Kagome from heartbreak. She was the whole world to him. How could she think he was picking Kikyo over her. He'd already done that before, but that was in the past.

"I swear….Kagome. I will never leave you again. I promise."

The two broke their embrace, and headed back to where they had been camping.

Inuyasha had meant every word. He would never leave her again.
