September 1, 1977

"Alright Prefects, congratulations to you all for being selected. I look forward to working with all of you. We'll start in a moment when the Head Boy gets here." Lily smiled around at the prefects gathered in the compartment. She had worried ever since she got the badge that said "HG" on it who the head boy might be, but she would know soon enough.

"Ello, all." James Potter said strutting into the compartment.

"Potter, this is the prefects compartment, I assume your not lost?" She smiled in an innocent "I'll kill you later" sort of way.

"Not lost Evans, I've been appointed head boy!" Lily felt her jaw drop along with everyone else in the compartment.

"No, you haven't, come on Potter, Dumbledore may be a little mad, but he'd never appoint you to head boy." Lily said after a minute of everyone staring dumbstruck at James Potter.

"Well, he has." James showed her his badge.

"You stole this, who'd you steal it from, come on Potter, out with it!"

"I didn't steal it, it's my badge, I'm head boy." Lily looked him dead in the eye and realized he wasn't joking. She would actually have to spend time with this git. This git with hazel eyes. Had Potter's eyes always been hazel, she'd never noticed.

"Fine. Let's begin then."

James smiled

September 5, 1977

"Oi Evans! You've got to wait for me when we patrol together!" James huffed running towards her.

"You've caught up though, haven't you?" Lily said not pausing as James bent to catch his breath.

"Well yeah," he took a drag from his cigarette. Why did everyone smoke? Lily wondered. What did they think was so wonderful about it? "But, I don't know… Anyway let's chat."

"I'd rather not."

"What you just want to walk in silence and not talk at all?"

"I have a better idea. You take the west side of the school and I'll take the east. We'll be done twice as fast and we don't even have to walk next to each other." Lily turned toward the kitchens and left James staring after her sullenly his cigarette still trapped in his mouth.
