A/N: Because I was rewatching X2, and when they're running through the tunnel, I could swear John almost goes back with them. Almost. I mean, he even takes another step towars them! So, yeah.
"We've got to go back!" She's screaming it at Bobby, grabbing his sleeve, but she's looking at John. Her eyes are locked on his, and he wants desperately to be twice himself. He wants to run and he wants to stay.
He really wishes there were two of him, because there are actual tears in her eyes, dammit, and he wants so badly to run away, but he could never really run without her. He takes a step forwards, then a step back, and the look of momentary hope on her face crumples and dies.
"He can take care of himself." He calls back at them, but she still turns back, and Bobby, perfect stupid normal Bobby goes with her, and they leave John behind. He can't really blame them. Everyone does.
So he follows them, a second behind, and he wants so badly to rewind time to the minute he met her.
Because he can see that she and Bobby make a good couple, but he knows that she and he could make a better one.
But he keeps taking steps away from from her, and she doesn't call for him to come back.
Even when she does, he won't listen.
