I listen to your silence.
I listen...and I wait.
When they leave you grieving, I will be your comfort.
I know what you're saying when you say everything's all right. I know what "I'm fine" means--I've said it before.
I know when it means you're going to be fine--and I know when it means the only thing holding you together is a stubborn desire to never fall apart.
When all the jokes are gone, when it's just us, you can come to me.
I will be here.
When they leave you angry, I will be your laughter.
I can see the pent-up fury. The polite manner that masks the rage you feel at injustice.
The competence that so wants to overshadow the cute face and figure...the anger at being considered a woman rather than a detective.
And while I can think of dozens of ways to pound out your anger, I would rather see you laugh it off.
I want to make you laugh, Jules. I want you to realize being angry will only hurt you in the end, and sometimes the greatest strength is learning to laugh.
Laugh with me.
When they leave you broken, I will be your healer.
I've seen you brush off failures.
And I've seen failures tear you down.
Given a chance, I would take them all for you. I would shelter you from every hard thing in the world.
But I can't.
So the least I can do is pick you back up.
Let me help you, Jules. Let me carry you.
When they leave you dancing, I will be your partner.
They miss the flash of triumph in your eyes, but I know what it is.
It's the victory dance of the little girl who finally outdid her brothers.
It's the celebration, the one little thing you allow yourself when you know you're right about something.
It's the grin you don't dare to show, the bubbly young woman reigned in by the detective.
It's okay to have to be serious...but it's also okay to be happy.
When they leave you laughing, I will laugh with you.
I listen to your silence.
I listen...and I wait.
And when they leave you smiling, I will rejoice.
And that's it! I'd love to know what you thought of it...
