Trivia: Fly Orchid (Ophrys insectifera) is a plant of the family Orchidaceae, a native of the British Isles and Europe favouring sites with alkaline soil. The name arises because it resembles a fly, being totally dependent on flies and bees for pollination.

Notes: The other side of my fic 'Fingers, Overlapping'. I suggest that you read the first one first before this. Either way, you could read this independently.

Fly Orchids
Deceit

I looked at Tezuka's fingertips, noticing it was almost touching my own, just near the table's edge. And from the corner of my eyes, as I pretend to read my book, I tried to estimate the distance between my left hand and Tezuka's right hand.

Tezuka's hand, for the moment, motionless beside my hand, fascinates me like the rest of Tezuka.

I looked up and I caught him looking straight at me as my notes lay forgotten on the surface of the table. Heart thumping, I smiled, as if to say:

"When will you be true to yourself?"

He did not answer because he did not understand what my eyes were saying. He probably thought I was asking something related to our exam.

I tried to concentrate. But the thunder roaring just outside the school is harsh; the faint flipping of pages, annoying. So I looked again at our hands, now anxious to know only one thing:

How far?

I attempted to measure with my eyes. There's a ruler on my right but I dared not use it.

Just a little over two centimeters, I thought.

My middle finger twitches and I saw Tezuka held his breath. The momentary movement, almost spastic from my vantage point, ceased.

Yes, about two centimeters.

Make your move Tezuka…

But as Tezuka's eyes contemplated whether to move closer to mine or not, my mobile rang and I refused to let a sigh escape my lips and picked it up with my right hand, still hoping that Tezuka will put his hand over mine.

I smiled at him calmly and passively as always; my eyes apologizing for the disturbance.

And I thought:

'What will you do after I say these words?'

I dared challenge myself as I put the phone against my ears. "Hi, Saeki… yes, I'm just about to finish. The roses were nice."

I paused to look at Tezuka and he immediately averted his eyes, looking nonchalant and disinterested in my conversation. I swallowed hard and spoke the words that will end our charades.

Would you be willing to fight for me?

"See you at seven, Ok? Bye, I love you."

I smiled at him for the third time, put the phone down and returned to my book for a few more minutes. I stayed still, hoping that something good will happen.

My left hand hadn't move and neither Tezuka's right hand.

And then, as if to shatter my resolve, I heard him sigh as his hand moved father away from mine.

'Am I not worthy?'

I couldn't help but ask myself as I assessed the distance one last time.

A thousand kilometers at least…
