James, Sirius, Remus and Peter throw their shoes in a pile in the corner of their dormitory. They push their beds together against the wall and pull their socks off half way so that the ends flop off. They each sit in each of the four corners on their knees on the red-gold carpeting. Remus, Peter, James, Sirius.
They look at the clock. Ten seconds to midnight. Nine seconds to midnight. Eight seconds to midnight. Seven seconds to midnight. Six seconds. Five seconds. Four seconds. Three. Two. One.
They start.
James lunges at Peter; his hand just barely brushes the sock. James pulls away wrinkling his nose. Peter crawls away.
Sirius pulls off one of James's socks as James backs into him. James gets angry. James grabs at Sirius's sock. Sirius dodges and Remus pulls off his sock in a sneak attack. James pulls off Sirius's last sock. Sirius is out. Sirius argues about double teaming. James grins, talks about how every man is for himself and pulls off Remus's sock. James whoops loudly and Peter sneaks up to him. Peter pulls off James's last sock. James pouts and crawls over to sit with Sirius.
Peter and Remus circle each other. Remus lashes out and turns towards Peter's feet. Remus suddenly pulls back clutching his throat. Peter slips off Remus's sock.
Peter wins. Peter never washed his socks for three months.
