I do not own Beetlejuice.
I got this idea after seeing "Doomie's Romance." Let me know what you think.
He remembered the first time it had happened. He hadn't expected it. The thought hadn't even crossed his mind. But it happened.
His Doomie had fallen in love.
In his 600-plus years, he had never seen it happen. Sure, he had seen couples together. Even couples that seemed genuinely to love—ick—one another. But he had never been there at that moment: the moment when the heart opened and the warmth flowed through and the eyes sparkled with the knowledge that nothing else could be so perfect.
"Everyone falls in love, Beetlejuice."
"Well…I don't."
Lydia had just laughed, and she shook her head.
The next time it happened, he was even more shocked. Claire Brewster, with she and Lydia being 18, had fallen in love with a college freshmen she had met at a party. And it had changed her, softened her somehow.
"How…"
Lydia just shrugged. "Everyone falls in love, Beetlejuice. No matter how cold they are."
"Not me," he replied, floating at the foot of her bed.
"Maybe not," she giggled. "But I kind of doubt it, Beetlejuice."
Sure, she probably meant with some dead chick. But he knew she was right. He knew the moment it happened.
It was Halloween night. Lydia had just said the magic B-words and brought them back to her world after a festive Neitherworld party.
"That was wonderful, BJ!"
"It was a real blast," Beetlejuice agreed with a grin, exploding as a firework. "Wasn't it, Babes?"
She smiled, softly, but Beetlejuice could tell something wasn't quite right.
"Lyds?"
"Promise me, Beej…even though I'm going to college next fall…you'll still be around?"
"No kiddin', Babes." He turned into a bottle of glue and attached to her side. "You're stuck with me."
Lydia smiled, and hugged her best friend.
And at that point, Beetlejuice knew. He knew he would do anything to keep that smile on her face. He knew his afterlife just wouldn't be worth living (figuratively speaking, of course) without her. And he knew he never wanted to leave her.
He knew he had fallen in love.
Guess it happens to everyone. Even Beetlejuice.
