Memory

By Htom Sirveaux

Lily was standing in their usual meeting spot, a place so secluded that the only place there wasn't dust was where her patent leather shoes had stirred it in soft clouds. As Severus approached, his hands jammed into his pockets so that she couldn't see he was shaking, he could see the disappointment in her eyes. He clutched a textbook to his hip, dog-eared and worn.

"I can't do this anymore," she said, staring at him with those bright green eyes. "I can't live this double life."

He pushed his black locks of hair from his eyes. "I- I thought everything was fine-"

"Calling me a Mudblood in front of everyone is 'fine?'" she demanded, her voice rising passionately. "After I tried to help? You can't have two truths, Severus! Either you agree to tell everyone we're seeing each other, or it's over."

He muttered something under his breath, the only words she could catch were "My friends…"

Lily crossed her arms, glaring at him. "Your friends are more interested in your abilities than you. God, Severus… I can't do this anymore."

"I can't just stop, Lily. They respect me. Somebody actually respects me!"

"They don't respect you, they're using you," she shook her head sadly. She stepped closer, ghosting her lips over his, and then stepped back. "I'm sorry, Severus."

Severus stood, watching in shock as she disappeared into the dark depths of the dungeon, the bright spot of her red hair burning into his retinas, leaving a spot that would never leave, no matter how long he shut his eyes.
