Hermione stepped outside the building, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue. Compared to the cool air inside the funeral home, the warmth of the sun on her face felt refreshing. She couldn't take another person she didn't know telling her how sorry they were for her loss. She knew she probably shouldn't have darted away at the first opportunity, but she had needed a moment to herself.

She looked over her shoulder when the door squeaked open behind her. A man appeared, loosening the tie around his collar. He seemed to be several years older than her and was dressed in an expensive looking suit. "Oh." He stopped when he saw her. "I'm sorry, I didn't – "

Hermione barely heard what he was saying. As soon as their eyes met, something changed. Hermione's mother had told her about how wonderful the colors were. There was no real way to describe them, but still Hermione had loved to hear the story of how beautiful the world had appeared to her mother when everything had blossomed into bright color when she'd met her soulmate.

For twenty five years, the world had been black and white to Hermione. As she looked at this stranger, Hermione realized that the grass, the sky, everything was different. She was seeing color for the first time ever.

The only thing that hadn't changed color was the stranger. His black hair nearly matched his suit and his piercing grey eyes were still locked onto her. He stared at her open-mouthed for several seconds before clearing his throat and approaching her, stopping beside her and staring out at the landscaped garden behind the building. "Can you see the colors too?"

Hermione nodded, unable to speak.

"Could you see them before?" He looked at her and Hermione shook her head.

"Me either." He laughed nervously. "A bit awkward, isn't it, meeting this way?" He turned away from her, his expression sobering. "I'm here for my little brother. We never got along. Our parents died years ago. I was the only one left to make the arrangements when he died."

"I'm sorry." Hermione felt compelled to open up to this stranger. She supposed it had a lot to do with the newfound knowledge of what he was to her. "My father – there was an accident – " As her eyes welled up with tears, Hermione felt a warm hand slip into hers. She dabbed at her eyes again. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be crying on your shoulder, we've barely even met."

"No worries," the man said, giving her a reassuring smile. "My name is Sirius Black, by the way."

"Hermione Granger." Despite the ache in her heart, Hermione returned the smile. She realized that Sirius might be just what she needed to piece herself back together again. She didn't know where they would go from here, but the future now seemed brighter than it ever had before.
