My feet are hard, and I carry heavy objects without complaint. I am
a slave in a world where animals and people born into the wrong social
class are subjected to harsh treatment. I have only one friend in this
place and it is her own story that I am here to tell. For I am a magical,
talking horse.
Her name was Adele. She was a princess who knew what she was actually getting herself into. She and her mother, the queen, often went out on long horse rides late in the day, speaking of how one day she would become queen, with her very own castle.
It was one tragically gloomy day that Adele's childhood fantasies came true and with it another chapter of her life ended. As Adele was packing for her ride her mother came in with both tears and a smile. The way the princess described it to me it was a happy smile as though something good had happened and yet the tears were not that way.
"My beautiful daughter." She began. "I have wonderful news for you. The prince to kingdoms over, won you in a game of craps."
This confused the princess. Because most of the time they would play roulette since the name sounds more royally appropriate.
"What's his name?" Adele asked.
"Now dear, you know prince's don't have names! It is not fairytale- like. They have to wait until they are king to be called anything but charming or childish."
In addition, witt that the queen hugged her daughter and left but not before telling Adele that she had to leave immediately. The princess had planned to quietly take her time going over every single piece of jewelry and silk thread in her room. Alas, this plan was stopped when the head maid walked in and continued to just throw things into the chests.
That evening the princess had dinner with her mother and then went outside. It was here that the queen gave her the last item for the trip. It was the handkerchief her mother was given on her own wedding day.
"I am too sick to make the long journey with you. The head maid shall go with you to the castle two kingdoms over, and make sure that nothing happens to you."
Then she whispered gently in her daughter's ear, "Keep this offering close to your heart, literally, for it has a drop of my blood and your grandmother's and is the only thing that can prove your seat on the throne."
Then the daughter sat upon me and we rode of to the castle two kingdoms over. Now there were several times on the way there that m' lady got thirsty and would stop by a drinking pool. At this point the maid was to get off her mule and fetch the water for the princess, yet she didn't. Each time Adele went down. On the third time this occasion came about as she bent down on her knees crying the small piece of cloth her mother had given her fell out of her dress and was quickly washed down the stream. The maid, seeing this, got off her horse and forced the princess to change clothes, jewelry, and horses, making the maid look like the princess.
