Chocolates and Rackets

By: whiterose

Something shifts uncomfortably in Ryoma's stomach as he watches those around him stutter and giggle. He flashes a scowl when one girl makes eye contact with him and she turns away from him back to her friends who were cheering her one. Ryoma dutifully ignores the growing pile of chocolates on his desk and glares at the front of the room.

It was official. Echizen Ryoma hated Valentine's Day.

He hated how normal people suddenly became insane and obnoxious on this day just for some cheap imitation of what they believed love was like. What high schooler can fall in love at this day and age, Ryoma doesn't know and he can even grasp the concept to those who even want to.

As a result, he ignores the love confessions made to him, ignores the chocolates, and most importantly, he ignores the girls making weird faces at him.

The bell rings and as fast as he can, the tennis player grabs his bag before making his way out of the room, without the chocolates.

"AHHH! Echizen! What about the chocolates!!" Horio screams out to him.

"You can have them." He mumbles out before he leaves, not waiting for a reply.

He finally makes it to the clubroom and it is only then he breathes a sigh of relief. He turns towards the lockers and notice that only Tezuka is there looking at him.

"Is something the matter Echizen?"

"It's Valentine's Day," he bites out. Tezuka nods and Ryoma notices the pile of chocolates in his buchou's locker.

"Buchou got chocolates," Ryoma remarks with a frown marring his face.

"Yes, they went to the effort of giving it to me, it's only polite" he answers back, while changing into his tennis uniform. It was left unsaid how Ryoma dealt with this day.

"You didn't accept their confessions." Ryoma remarks, not as a question but as a statement.

"No, I did not." Tezuka answers back, even though he knew it wasn't question.

Ryoma scoffs. Obviously, why would someone give chocolate when confessing? Ryoma doesn't understand. It would be more probable to give new tennis shoes or grip tape, thought Ryoma as he quickly changed into his uniform. Tezuka was going over a list of what needed to be done for training for today when Ryoma finished changing. He quickly grabbed his red tennis racket before taking out another one, which had the letter "T" inscribed onto the bottom of the racket.

"Buchou, Happy Valentine's Day." Ryoma stated, handing the new racket to the now shocked captain. As soon as Tezuka took it, Ryoma nodded before turning and leaving the room.

"…Valentine's Day." Tezuka mumbles out before smiling and gripping the new racket in his left hand.

It was absolutely perfect.
