THANK YOU CRAZYCAT9449, for helping me through this, and listening to my ramblings about how I couldn't possibly make Bering and Wells Chess not angsty.
It's as she's walking up the stairs that she notices it. Helena's door, slightly open. Odd, she thinks to herself, Helena's rarely even in her room, let alone with the door open. As Myka gets closer, just to check in on her, or close the door if the room is empty, she sees her. Helena, with her back to the door, kneeling in front of...something on the floor. Her hair is pulled back too, not all of it, but enough that it's out of her face, secured with clips that Myka is sure are Claudia's. She's been working on something. The only time she ever pulls back her hair is when she's working on something.
Myka knocked on the door before walking inside,
"Hey, what are you..." She trailed off when Helena moved and she saw what was in front of her.
A chess board.
It looked old. Older than Artie's that, surprisingly enough, he'd had the courtesy to remove from public view. Myka had nearly had a panic attack when she'd seen it again after the warehouse was restored, and after that, Artie had moved it.
"Where did you...why do you..." Myka couldn't finish her sentence. Her mind was already casting images of Hong Kong.
"It was in my things. I was looking for...for something and I came across it. I...I can't seem to put it away though." Helena said quietly, not looking at Myka. She hadn't looked at Myka since she'd walked into the room.
"It looks...old." Myka wanted to say that it was beautiful, and antique, and terrifying, but old was all she could muster.
Helena chuckled slightly, "indeed, it is. Caturanga gave it to me, many, many years ago."
Myka smiled at her, "Hand carved?"
"Mahogany, yes. Observant as always." Myka sat across from Helena in front of the board, with it between them.
"Did you want to..." Myka motioned to the board
"I don't know." Helena said, "Honestly, I don't know. I used to love playing so much. But...after Hong Kong..."
"I know. Artie's even moved his board out of his office."
"I noticed that. Because of you do you think?"
"Definitely. Because of us." Myka smiled.
"Do you want to play? Make new memories."
"I'd like that."
