The One Who Mattered Most

They watched them, hidden from view.

They watched her sit curled up in his lap as feathery white clouds drifted across the azure sky.

They watched his hand cup her chin, turning her face towards his.

They watched his finger tickle her cheek as he pulled her close.

They watched the innocent kiss with pure malice.

They cursed.

They sneered.

They plotted.

They shared the same sense of helplessness and betrayal.

He had chosen another.

One who was no longer one of them.

One whose choppy hair gleamed the color of coral.

One whose eyes sparkled like emeralds.

One who understood his unsaid words.

One who would love him forever and a day.

They believed they could do that.

Believed they could heal the hole in his heart.

Just as she had done.

But in truth, they only wanted.

One wanted his beautiful black eyes to gaze endlessly into.

One wanted his silky hair to stroke.

One wanted his soft, thin lips to kiss and whisper into her ear.

One wanted his powerful arms to wrap around her and hold her tight.

One wanted his pale cheeks to blush whenever she spoke to him.

One wanted his silent protection.

One wanted only a trophy to show off.

One wanted his attention for herself only.

One wanted to be noticed.

One wanted to feel the cold metal of a ring sliding onto her finger.

One wanted him away from her no matter the cost.

One wanted those loving gazes to be thrown in her direction.

They all wanted.

But none needed.

None needed him the way she did.

She needed his hugs and whispers of comforting words when her tears fell like summer rain.

She needed to know her actions were getting through, making a difference in his life.

She needed to see him transform into someone who loved her as deeply as she loved him.

She needed him to protect her when she couldn't protect herself.

She needed him when she was nothing but a frightened little girl.

As he needed her.

He needed her soft, cool touch to erase the blood flowing from his bleeding body.

He needed her to be close by so he wouldn't worry about her safety.

He needed someone to spirit away into the night for hours of dancing under the stars.

He needed someone who wouldn't give up on him no matter how much he resisted.

He needed someone to see through his words, see his real intentions.

He needed someone who would fuse closed the wounds in his soul.

He needed someone to love.

He chose her of his own free will.

The one who had stood by him all this time.

The one who defended him when others saw only a common animal.

The one who gave him those soft touches that sent electric shocks racing through him.

The one who made him feel wanted.

The one who told him he had a place in this world.

He knew his place.

His place was with her.

Not with them.

The ones who only wanted.

But with the one who needed.

The one who mattered most.

The one who would help him remember how to love.

The one who could restore his shattered soul.

The one who would never leave him alone and broken.

Haruno Sakura.
