Author's note: Just a very short drabble I wanted to get out of my system, based on a very old joke I heard a while ago. My very first formal fanfic in english so please excuse the mistakes (or even better, gimme some critique). It's set up after the war, and both Zuko and Aang are single.
"Could you pass the juice, please?"
Toph used her metal bending to move the jug towards the monk, wearing a look of bragging pride on her face. Zuko's hand falls on the Avatar's shoulder and squeezes it gently, stealing a smile from the young lips as he pours the liquid on his glass.
"I have a lot of paperwork ahead of me. I hope I don't burn it all in frustration," the Fire Lord sighed.
Aang smirks back and so does Toph, but not for the same reason.
-So, you have been living here for a month or something? –she asks, after the Fire Lord leaves the dining hall. Aang munches on some bread and nods cheerfully –You seem really comfortable here already.
"It's pretty close to most of the stuff I have to deal with in the Fire Nation as the Avatar, we have regular meetings with the different ambassadors and I get to keep an eye on the military operations. Besides, there's enough room for a hundred people in this giant palace. I can even fit Appa in this room alone! I don't think I'm bothering Zuko by staying here."
"Yeah, I don't think he's bothered either " she nodds, taking a bite on her roasted fish, still keeping her smirk, her toes girded to the floor beneath "In fact, I could even assert he's…very pleased with your presence here."
"Hey, I know what you think" Aang knows that the best way (more like "the only way") to deal with this earthbender was being clear and straightforward "And I can assure you, there is nothing between me and Zuko. We're just good friends. You know I can't lie to you."
"Yeah" the master hides her widened smile underneath her bangs, as she slurps her soup up "I know."
The morning after Toph's visit ends, Zuko notices his crown is missing. He gets the whole castle moving to find it, and as time passed and the crown is nowhere to be found he gets more and more anxious. He has an important meeting in a week and there was no way he could assist without the royal emblem.
After three days of fruitless search Aang starts blaming the matter on Momo, who liked to use the headdress as a toy, but Zuko has someone else in his mind.
"The crown went missing the same day Toph left. Maybe she took it by accident " the Fire Lord suggests "You should write a letter to her academy, hopefully she knows something about it."
Aang sends a hawk right away to his friend, with a small note.
"Toph:
I'm not saying you took Zuko's crown, but the fact remains that it has been missing since the last time you came here. I hope you can help us figure this out.
Aang"
A day later the hawk came back with a response, and when Aang read it his whole face reddened in shame. The letter was also short.
"Aang:
I'm not saying you and Zuko have something, but the fact remains that if you were sleeping in your OWN bed, you would have found the crown by now, under the pillow.
Best of luck to you both, Twinkle Toes.
Toph."
