Prologue
"She's beautiful." Willowbreeze looked adoringly at her new kit. It was mewing softly, its white-silver pelt lit up by the moon. "Ah, yes, Willowbreeze, she is a work of art." Crookedstar meowed, smiling down warmly at his tiny daughter. They watched the silvery she-kit, intrigued by her every move. She swatted playfully at her parents, but a look of horror suddenly crossed her face. something behind her. Just then, Willowbreeze let out a screech of pain. Crookedstar whirled around to face her, horrified. Willowbreeze was writhing with a fox, a look of absolute pain and determination on her face as she struggled to keep it away from her beloved kit. The big tom leaped into action, looking like a streak in the darkness, but it was too late. The fox had bitten her neck before it scampered off, just as quickly as it had came. Willowbreeze was alive, but just barely. In a fit of desperation, Crookedstar called for Mudfur, their medicine cat. The long-haired brown tom came dashing to the nursery, but with one look, he could tell that the light brown she-cat would not survive. Indeed, just a few moments later, Willowbreeze could tell too. "Crookedstar... goodbye. I regret that our kit will grow up without a mother. Keep a strong bond with her. I will be safe with StarClan. I will watch over both of you. And remember, I love you alwa..." Then the beautiful she-cat's tail twitched, her paws jerked, and she was still forevermore. Crookedstar let out a fierce yowl, loud enough for even StarClan to hear, but even that could not wake her. "Was that..." "An omen." Mudfur finished Crookedstar's words. "An omen." Suddenly Mudfur began to change. His eyes lit up the color of Silverpelt, and the prophecy he uttered was not his, but Starclan's. "Your daughter will have someone in her life that will love her more than his life itself. Do not stop them. Their destinies, hearts, and lives are intertwined. There was a decided chill in the air, and Crookedstar sensed that Starclan had told Mudfur something more about his daughter, something terrible. He decided not to press Mudfur any further, and dismissed him with a flick of his Mudfur padded off into the darkness toward his den, Crookedstar could not help but wonder what else Starclan had told Mudfur. Suddenly, a horrific thought crossed his mind. Would his daughter's kits have the same fate as their mother?
