The Musings Of A State Alchemist
Do you know what it's like....to have everything taken from you? Do you know what it's like to lose it all? I won't know if you did, but I know they do.
I watched as Edward or Ed and Alphonse or Al sat in the grass by the Central Military Base. Al was playing with a stray kitten and Ed laid on the lawn. He watched clouds fly by, his head resting in his arms. Al ran after the small cat, his armor clanking loudly with his laughing. Ed glanced over at Al and his eyes softened. I recalled the same face scowling at me just this morning. Ed really didn't like being gentle to anyone, but Al. Or so people thought, but I know better. The older Elric brother expresses his care for others through his temper and that is sometime I can understand.
It must be hard, to lose someone you love. Then to lose your brother's body and your arm and leg. You feel guilt, I know you do.
Ed and stood up and called Al over to him. Al ran over with no protest. Al was very kind and listened to what adults said, unlike his brother. Al must have spoken to Ed because the blond answered something to him. Al turned away and I was sure I saw a pained look cross Ed's face. He always holds it back until he thinks no one's looking. We all can tell, if he wasn't so stubborn maybe we could help him.
I can understand guilt, I know it well. The feel of blood on your hands.
That's right, Ed had to kill before too. He's a dog of the state, it makes sense. It still makes you sick when you do, unless you like it. I, however, do not. I'm glad that I'm usually here and not back at the war zones. I'm still a coward even now, just like then...when I couldn't pull the trigger. Ed and Al entered the base and I heard them walking down the hall. Ed was howling about how he would chop off the legs of the next person who called him short and see how they liked it. Of course I knew he was kidding, he would never do that.
He doesn't know that pride can lead to so many horrors. Men end up alone because of it. But...I won't let that happen to them. They've had enough of it.
A knock came from the door to the room. I turned to it and stood behind my desk. I shouted a 'come in' and the two brothers walked in and sat on the couch in front of my desk.
"Hello, boys." I greeted.
"Hello." Al responded politely, while Ed just grunted.
"Is that anyway to say 'hi' to your boss?" I taunted."That's not very nice, you should get help for that short-."
"WHO ARE YOU CALLING SO SHORT THAT HE HAS TO MAKE SURE A FLEA DOESN'T STEP ON HIM!" Ed yelled.
"Brother, that's not what he said. Calm down!" Al said, grabbing Ed.
I chuckled and shook my head.
These two, I'll sure they'll be fine.
"Hey Colonel, what did ya want anyway?" Ed asks.
I turn to look at him and smirk, I have another lead for you." I state.
As long as they are under my charge. The charge of Colonel Roy Mustang.
