"Why do you want to be a hero?"
Mitsu Ai stared at the palms of her hands in awe. Not only was her orange hair glowing, but a thin orange sphere began to form on them. Her parents were there, making noises of excitement. Mitsu grinned up at her mom and dad, "I got your quirk dad!"
Her blue eyes stayed focused on the sphere. It was so tiny, and it looked so fragile. For a moment Mitsu wondered if she could bounce it like those tiny bouncy balls from the convenience stores. Determined, she slowly started to try and shift the ball in one hand. "Smile Mitsu!"
Click
The sudden light of the camera made Mitsu jump and drop her ball, shattering upon impact with the ground. "I was gonna play with that."
She felt hurt when her dad began to laugh, "Oh, don't worry sweetie. You have to use your quirk more before you can use it the way you want." Mitsu tilted her head at her dad's statement, was that how that worked? Could she really trust him? This was coming from the man who had told her that the tooth fairy beats you up if you don't sleep when he comes around.
"Really?"
"Really, do it again." Mitsu nodded and did it again. It took a bit longer for the sphere to form this time. She wondered why. As the sphere was almost finished her dad grabbed one of her toy hammers off the floor and walked over to her.
"Okay, you see how it took longer to form and that it's smaller?" He crouched down in front of Mitsu, who nodded at what he said, realizing that it was smaller than the first one. "Well when this happens…", he lightly touched the hammer to the sphere to make it shatter, "it uses up your energy. It's like training your muscles sweetheart."
At that last statement her father began to flex his arm muscles, making Mitsu giggle. Her dad was weird. She wasn't sure how it worked, but if using it more means she can play with a ball then she'll do it all the time!
"Let's do it again!", Mitsu chirped as her hair began to glow. However, no sphere appeared this time. Her eyelids grew heavy and her body felt like lead. Why was she getting so sleepy? She could barely make out her parents' words, "Silly…tired…bed."
"When I was four my dad began to teach me how to use my quirk. He did this by us playing hero around the house. When I turned 6…"
"Wake up sweetie."
Mitsu shifted around a bit before she sat up. She felt so sleepy, was it really morning time already? How come mom didn't wake her up to the smell of breakfast like normal?
"Are we late?" Mitsu yawned as she held her teddy bear close. Her mother shushed her with trembling lips, placing a hand on her back.
"Quickly now, follow me and stay quiet." Mitsu nodded, her mother dragging her to their bedroom by her arm, Mitsu dragging her teddy on the floor with the other arm.
Crash
The house shook.
"Mom?" Mitsu could hear yelling from downstairs. It sounded like her dad and some man. She hasn't heard that voice before. Her mother shut the door behind them and opened the door to the walk-in closet, "In here."
Mitsu obliged and stood inside the closet, her mother kneeling down to meet her face. It was then that she saw the look of fear in her mom's eyes, the tear stained cheeks, and the trembling stature of her normally well put together, strong mother. Something was wrong.
"Don't come out of this closet for anything, you hear me?" Mitsu was pulled into a tight hug as her mother began to sob. "We love you. Everything is going to be alright." For a moment, her mother hesitated before placing her forehead on her daughter's, "Can I see you smile sweetie?"
Sniffling, Mitsu nodded and wiped away the snot and tears on her face. She didn't understand why her mom wanted this, but she put on the biggest smile she could for her mom. Mitsu was sure that she noticed the fear in her eyes, but that wasn't what mattered now. "Always remember to smile.", her mom muttered as she held Mitsu closer.
The shouting was getting louder. Taking in a deep breath, her mom let her go, walked out, and shut the door. Once the door was shut, Mitsu watched as it began to fade away and appear to be just a wall. Her mother had never used her quirk to hide her before.
Mitsu sat there for what felt like forever, clinging tightly to her teddy bear. She could hear the screaming, banging, and crashing going throughout the house. At some point she heard a gun go off, more people, and then silence.
"Where is she?" Mitsu wiped her tears and perked up a bit. That voice sounds like her dad's!
"I'm in here dad!" She cried out as she banged at the invisible door. It took a moment, but the door eventually began to appear again. As the door began to open Mitsu could barely hear the words, "We just lost the woman too!"
"Hello there, my name is Tsukauchi. I'm here to help."
"…my parents were murdered. I was put under the care of Auntie Aiko and Uncle Riku."
Smack
"Don't you ever leave such a mess again, you hear me?" Auntie yelled as she stared down at Mitsu, who was now holding her hand against what would soon be a bruised cheek. Mitsu didn't know what she did wrong, all she had out were the crayons and coloring book.
"Yes Ma'am." Mitsu trembled as Auntie's hand reached towards her again, this time her hand hovering over the one holding her cheek.
"I have to go to work now. I expect dinner to be made by the time I'm back. Now grab your stuff and go to school. I better not get a call about you being late again." Mitsu nodded and ran to brush her teeth. Looking at herself in the mirror she saw no bruise where she had hit her.
Her Auntie's quirk, Makeup, made spots disappear or shades of color appear on any part of the body she touched. She's a well-known beauty guru that works for actors and actresses. So, her range and limit were perfect for people all around the city.
Mitsu just wished that she didn't use it this way.
Grabbing her winter coat and scarf, Mitsu made her way to school.
"Hey there Mitsu." Mitsu stared up at Mrs. Midoriya who was smiling at there. Mitsu shifted on her weight a bit, but quickly shifted back. She had forgotten that her ankle was still healing from last week's fight.
"Hi Mrs. Midoriya, how are you?" Mitsu asked as she looked down at the ground. It was hard for her to look adults in the eyes sometimes. She was scared that they would hurt her if she stared. That's how it is with Auntie.
"I'm good. I got over excited packing Izuku's lunch today and packed an extra. How about you take it?" Mrs. Midoriya said as she held out the brown paper bag. Mitsu stared at it a moment before taking in her hands.
"Thank you. I have to go now or else I'll be late." And with that Mitsu turned around and scurried off, missing the worried look on Mrs. Midoriya's face as she muttered a few words to herself.
The school day was normal. Mitsu did her best to follow along during class and played with Izuku during recess. A couple of times Katsuki would be mean, but she figured if she went to the bathroom, she could hide from him there. To end the day off she fell asleep during class. Depending on how bruised or hungry she was depended on how often Mitsu fell asleep during class. The teacher brought it up to Auntie once, but she explained it was Narcolepsy.
Thud
"Ow." Mitsu muttered as she woke up. A big eraser was on the floor, Katsuki must have hit her bruised cheek with it.
"Ha, that's what you get." After a moment of coming to, Mitsu realized that the class was empty besides her and the teacher.
"Miss Ai, you should probably get going. It's getting a bit late. I gave you a little extra time to sleep because of your episode." Mitsu paled as she grabbed her things and bolted, forgetting her jacket as she ran. The sun was already starting to go down, there was no chance that she would have dinner ready in time. And the snow certainly wasn't helping her get there fast.
When she got to the house Mitsu nearly cried as she saw her Auntie's car parked by the house. She was really going to get it this time. Going up to the door she went to open it, but it was locked. Sighing, she looked under the mat to grab the house key. It wasn't there.
"Auntie I'm locked out!", Mitsu cried as she banged against the door. This went on for a good five minutes before she saw her aunt look through the mini glass window on the door. Then she walked away.
Near tears, Mitsu walked away from the house and began to trudge down the street. She had no clue where to go. All the signs and house numbers were either frosted or piled with snow. Finding a friend would be nearly impossible in this weather. Heavily breathing, Mitsu kept on for a good twenty minutes before she collapsed in the snow.
"Mrs. Bakugo found me on her way back from the store. After a case was made and someone with a nullifying quirk took action, I was put in the care of the Suzuki family who lived nearby. Of course, my Aunt and Uncle had to move because of a restraining order. I wasn't the same for a while."
Mitsu,
We have to work late again. There are leftovers in the fridge. I even got some dango for you.
Love,
Hina and Minato
Mitsu Ai has always smiled.
No matter what she went through she did her best to keep a smile on her face. It was what her mother had told her right before she died. It was what her Auntie told her so the teachers wouldn't suspect abuse.
It's what she told herself, so she didn't make others feel bad.
Mitsu's heart was beating fast as she got closer to the edge. Everything would be better soon. She would finally be free of all the troubles life has put her through. All she has to do it take a few more steps and jump.
When she got to the edge, she stopped. The sun was beginning to set, and she could hear the bustling noise of people trying to get home in time for supper. For a moment, she wondered what she would be putting the Suzuki family through by doing this.
They took her in two years ago with open arms, but they were never around because of work. They didn't have any children other than her because of Mrs. Hina's fertility issues. Would they even notice if she was gone? Mitsu would only ever see them at night or during the summer and winter vacations from school.
Then there was the Midoriya and Bakugo families. Both mothers from those families have done their best to check in on her and see how she was doing. They would occasionally check up on her, invite her over for dinner, and hang out with her. Izuku was her friend, but she wasn't sure if it was out of pity or not. She never talked to him about what has happened to her.
Mitsu took in a deep breath and held the pendant around her neck.
Katsuki was the same way. He knew nothing, but he also treated her like nothing. The three of them used to be such great friends. She wondered where it all went wrong. They used to hang out all the time, go on mini adventures, joke around, and admire All Might.
Things will never be the same. Mitsu knew this. Which is why she took a step forward. And each moment she got closer to the water she swore she saw her life flash before her eyes. And there was one memory that made her yell out.
"Help!"
"A student from U.A. saved my life. Of course, I was in the hospital for a bit because I got hypothermia. I even got the help I needed to get better mentally…"
"I grew up thinking that I needed a hero when this entire time I could have been exactly that for myself. I want to inspire people to stay strong. I also want to help kids who have been hurt in any way get the help they need. Being a hero would help me accomplish those goals."
"I think you can manage it. Just make sure you get to your assigned training ground in time."
Principle Nezu took a sip of his tea and eyed the girl for a moment as she got up, thanked him for the tea, and left. She is an interesting one, that much is certain. He didn't think that he would be running into Sora's child like this.
Don't worry dear friend, she'll be in good hands
"Whoever comes in last place in the eight tests will be punished with expulsion."
Mitsu froze as they all stared at their teacher in disbelief. This dude is crazy! Expelling a student that got in through evaluations on the first day? Mitsu took in a deep breath as she nodded. She made it this far.
She'll just have to do her best.
