A small bead of sweat drifted down my neck, for probably the first time in my life. The gas station's white wire shelves had been pushed down in my attempt to evade the woman. Her appearance was much younger than mine. I was aging so fast I was starting to look just like Mom, or even Grammy Esme, but I knew she was probably much older than me.
"Who are you? " I repeated. "And what do you want from me?"
"I told you," She said with a certain nonchalance. "I'm your worst night mare. And tonight, you'll be answering my questions."
She blinked her bright red eyes and flashed me an expectant smirk. "Pain." She said.
I just stood there with my hands on my hips, looking at her as if I were the one expecting something. I wasn't. Mom's shield was always on me, so I could not be touched.
"They wanted you dead at first, but your cute little face changed their minds." She began pacing, as if preparing to give me a very long lecture. "But my opinion never changed, and now, with Aro dead, it's my opinion that matters to the Guard. With great power comes great responsibility, so now it is my responsibility to get rid of you." She inched towards me, her heels clicking across the dirty linoleum tile.
I heard a breathy purr from behind me. A familiar furry texture nudged my neck, my signal to move over. I looked behind me as I shuffled to my left. His wolf form wasn't his most attractive, but he was scary and aggressive. I moved away a safe distance, turning my head away from the scene. I didn't need any more afflicting images.
I dared myself to look. Jacob was back in his human form, glaring menacingly at Jane.
"Its oka'y, Nessie," Jake said, not looking away from her. "She won't hurt you. She can't. She no longer has power in the Volturi. She's messing with your head. She's just trying to scare you."
He grabbed my hips and began pulling me towards the gas station's glass doors.
"It is most certainly not okay!" My mother's voice shocked me out of the silence.
Before any of us could stop her, she lunged toward the other vampire.
