#36 of my 100 theme challenge. This is dedicated to (and I know she'll kill me for this..) my bestest friend in the world Bethany (Numbuh 212), since she gave me the list for this challenge.
Precious Treasure
This was it. The day he had been waiting for. His breath caught in his throat as he spotted his wife for the first time in ten years. Tears welled in his eyes and spilled onto his pure, white shirt as he climbed up the rigging for a better view of the picturesque scene. He had not a care in the world at the moment; this, and only this, mattered to him as he watched the shore grow closer and closer. Curly hair flying in the wind behind him, his deep brown eyes shifted from the tall, beautiful form of his Elizabeth to the shorter, childlike figure standing next to her. Even from a distance, Will knew exactly who this was, even though before that moment, he could not even fathom the idea: this boy, who was a mirror image of Will, was his son. At that moment, he felt a slightly foreign feeling coursing through his body, as if a spurt of warmth had made its way from his toes to his fingertips. Pressing his hand flat against his chiseled chest, he could feel his heartbeat again, slowly at first, then faster as he waited in anticipation. His heart swelled with pride for his wife, for waiting for him, for giving him a healthy and handsome son, for raising their son alone. It seemed so surreal to him, as if it was a dream. This is too good to be true, Will thought, the shoreline only hundreds of feet away.
But it is true, Will smiled as his feet hit sand minutes later. His beautiful wife and child stood waiting a few feet away, and he sprinted over to them, sand flying behind his feet. He pulled Elizabeth first into a hug, and then drew his son to join them. Tears of joy were again running down Will's cheeks as the three of them embraced, unaware of their surroundings, unaware of the time that passed. His heart ached with love for his family, finally feeling whole for the first time in over a decade.
A pirate, and a good man, once told him that not all treasure was silver and gold. And as he held his family, his most precious treasure of all, he knew the pirate was right.
