I didn't have many friends… well, I didn't have any friends. I was an outcast.
And like every human being, I wanted my voice to be heard. I wanted to matter. But as I've already stated, I was an outcast, with no friends, and that made things much, much worse.
So, who was the outcast who wanted to voice her opinion about Macbeth in English? That's me but I was always too shy and too much of a coward to raise my hand and speak. It was as if the teacher heard my inner monologue. She called my name and my heart started fluttering and… I tried to speak but the bell rang and everyone started packing and my face fell but no one saw… everyone wanted to go for lunch… eat and socialize. Well, everyone except me. I hated the canteen. It was so loud and crowded. I always ended eating my homemade sandwich in the toilet stalls and I'm not kidding. Bullies targeted me because I had no friends. I learnt to survive by being invisible. As I was almost out of the door, the teacher called my name. I raised my eyebrows and she gave me a small smile.
"Are you interested in joining the book club?"
What?!
"Er… I think about it," I mutter.
She nodded and I awkwardly waved goodbye at the red head and I trudged to the toilet stalls, knowing that I wouldn't be joining the book club anytime soon.
I wondered what I did wrong. When did things change? I had five friends when I first started attending High school. Now, they don't even look at me to say 'hi' and vice versa. I mused about texting Odette but she never replied to any of my text messages, even when we were friends. Than I laughed at me. This is fine. Why should I bother. In six months I will finish High School and go to College. I can make new friends there. New place, new people and new me. Six more months of eating in toilet stalls and then a fresh new start. I could stay in the shadows for another six months, right?
My mobile phone buzzed and I chuckled darkly when I realised that the English teacher wanted to be my friend… via Facebook. Oh, how I loathed that Social Media. I accepted her friend request because that was easy… easy as breathing the stale air circulating in the small toilet stall.
"Annie?"
I sighed and mumbled "Go away!"
"But Annie, Mum wants you to eat lunch with me."
"Well, I've ate all of my food so go away."
Two quick raps on the door and I knew that my sister was going to combust with frustration.
"Annie, this is not hygenic at all!"
I opened the stall door and was faced with an angry Lauren.
I rolled my eyes at her.
"Why are you doing this?" Lauren asked with her eyes narrowed.
"I… I feel safe here."
Lauren rolled her eyes.
"Come on! I want you to see the new kids."
"New kids?"
"Yep and they're hot!"
"Hotter than Chris Hemsworth?" I asked with a small smile.
Lauren nodded and insisted that I'd wash my hands and face.
"You're going to start eating lunch with me."
"But your friends…"
"They'll get used to your freakness soon enough, darling."
They stared at me and I said 'Hello' underneath my breath.
"You're Annie, right?" a girl with black curly hair said. I nodded and the introductions were made. Lauren started going on about the 'new hot guy' who apparently was three tables away from us. He was beautiful… too beautiful… he was with his adopted siblings and apparently Jessica was planning to talk to him afterwards. My eyes darted to Mike when I heard my name.
"So you're a senior?"
I nodded and sighed. How I prefered the toilet stalls.
