Breathing for Her
-Drabble-
Clark Kent has been to enough of her funerals to last him a lifetime. But in the past, there'd been a moment of questioning. She'd lived through so much, conquered death so many times, that how could it take her now? But this time there's no possibility for her to be alive.
He held her for hours, days, waiting for her to heal, to wake up. But her heartbeat never returned and her skin fell cold. The smile he begged God to return never bloomed and finally, she was taken from him with a concerned pat on his shoulder and an, "I'm sorry, Clark. But she's gone. It's time to let her go."
He wants to take her back, to disappear in a blink of the eye and hide until she wakes up. But the truth of the matter finally sets in and he knows that the black suit he saves for just these morose occasions is going to be worn again.
He ignores the way they stare at him, pitying him, trying to comfort him somehow. He avoids Lois, his mother, everybody he can. He stands on the outskirts and he watches them lower the casket, knowing that she's in there and she's not breathing or moving or screaming for him to be there, to help her, to save her like he always has.
And he wishes he was strong enough to impale himself on kryptonite, wishes he could just lay down arms and follow her into the great beyond. But he can't and she wouldn't want him to and what she wants and thinks has meant so much for so long that he can't disobey. So he dawns the suit and he saves the people and when he's finally allowed to breathe, he does it for her.
