Back in the eighties, I was nothing but a little girl, not older than 7 years old. Even at such young age, I already knew the cruelty of war. I didn't completely understand why, but I just knew that I had to keep moving and seek refuge. I went to sleep every night with the fear of not finding my family alive, and some days I woke up with that fear come true. Fire, screams, gunshots... they were part of my daily life.
Soon I was all alone. I had no one to take care of me. I was a young little girl doomed to be killed or enslaved.
Then I met Saladin. Or more accurately, Saladin found me.
I was caught in the middle of a guerrilla fight, hiding in a destroyed building. I craddled myself into a corner and closed my eyes and covered my ears, wishing for the fight to stop.
I prayed for an angel to rescue me and take me away from that war. And that's exactly what happened.
I remember feeling a cold metal on my shoulder and jumping in fear, but when I saw that blue eye looking so caring at me, I felt safe. He motioned me to stay silent, but I was speechless already. He looked weird to be an angel, his left hand was red and metallic, he had an eyepatch and a strange kind of horn in his forehead. I recall him usually referring to himself as a demon, but for me, ever since I saw him, he was a beautiful angel. An angel of death sometimes, but still an angel.
He took me under his wing and brought me to Diamond Dogs, where I found other children like me. Orphans and child soldiers, all rescued by him. He gave us a new home and a new family, and explained to us that although we would never be able to escape war, he'd do his best to help us survive it. We were his children now.
Still, I didn't want to be in the middle of the battlefield. While other children took a liking to hold firearms and engage in CQC, I preferred to stay distant. I had seen war up too close, and I wanted to be far from it. That's when Saladin put me under Quiet's tutelage.
She was a beautiful woman, and although she couldn't speak she showed me the ropes of sniping. The fact that she was silent actually helped me to get used to the loneliness of waiting for my prey. She was like an older sister to me.
I also remember DD... you know, Hal, these wolves you're feeding are actually his grandchildren. He was a really smart wolfdog, and very noble too. He was always with me, as well as his puppies and their puppies.
But then those happy days came to an end. After Saladin's death, I found myself without a purpose. Even after Diamond Dogs and Outer Heaven were destroyed, I had Saladin to give us the hope of a new home. Now that ZanzĂbar Land is destroyed and Saladin is gone, I have no home nor father to return to. I've become just a puppet of the government. And I'm tired of the battlefield already.
All I can do now is to wait.
Just wait.
