The weather outside the window was quiet and gray, much like the atmosphere inside. He stood, looking in, wondering if he should enter or not. Throwing caution to the wind and knowing that he would never be caught, he slipped in quietly and went up to the bed.

She was frail, she was sickly, and she was dying. There was nothing he could do now to help her, when all those years ago he wasted his chance. Walking over to the chart, he felt tears sting his eyes, knowing they would never be shed.

Isabella Swan-Perchins. Stage three leukemia. How ironic, he thought sadly. He had wanted her for her blood for so long, and now it was her blood that would be killing her. He choked back a sob.

There was a chair by the bed, and it smelled sort of like she used to, but still different. Maybe offspring. He sat down and took her hand, cold from the hospital air conditioning but still warmer than his own. He pulled her blanket up a little more, not wanting her to catch cold.

How could he leave her all of those years ago? She had done exactly as he wanted, moved on, gotten married, maybe even had children. But now she was dying, and he would not be able to go on. As thought of Volterra flew through his head, she stirred, opening her eyes weakly and gasping.

"Edward." He couldn't help it. He cried.

"Yes, yes my love." He kissed her hand with his icy lips and felt her shiver; trying to let go of her hand so she could warm up, Bella grabbed it as hard as she could and didn't want to let go.

"I've been waiting for you." A simple short statement, it seemed to take all of her strength. Edward knew enough from Medical school that stage three leukemia was fatal, a cure extremely hard to find.

"I'm so sorry, Bella. I should never have left you. I loved you so much. I still love you…" he whimpered. She moved her hand slowly from his and to his face.

"Shh, Edward. Don't cry. It was a mistake, but it's all right. I did what you wanted me to." She whispered. A smile ghosted across her lips and she continued. "I hoped you never stopped loving me. I told my daughter about you. She never liked that I spoke so fondly of someone other than her father, but I never changed my feeling for you."

How much had she told her daughter? "Daughter?" he choked. She lay her head back down, nodding as she closed her eyes. "Elizabeth." Before she could continue, her face twisted into a grimace of pain.

"Bella, do you need the nurse?" he said frantically. She nodded again and he kissed her forehead. Pressing the button that would call the front desk, he looked at her one more time before whispering, "I love you always." and jumping from the window.

All he had wanted for her had broken his heart. And now, the only person he would love was gone.
