I had been spying her from across the room all night. She had brown hair, in curls, waving down her back, I wasn't close enough to see the colour of her eyes, but I planned to change that soon. She wore a creamy coloured dress that flowed down to the ground. When she had stopped conversing with Mrs. Smith, I walked over to her slowly.

'May I have this dance, mi lady?' I asked, holding out my hand.

Her eyes widened slightly as she looked at me, they were a golden brown colour, but she didn't answer. I dropped my hand.

'My name is Edward Masen.' I continued after a moment, and hoping some way to recognise me would help her open up, 'My parents are friends with the Smiths.'

'Hello Edward' she greeted politely, her voice was sweet, 'My names Lillian...I'm sorry but I must be on my way.'

'Oh, won't you spare a minute or so?' My face fell, and she smiled apologetically.

'It was a pleasure.' With that she turned and walked away.

I went back to John, and sat down.

'She left in a hurry.' He laughed.

I shot him a glare, but then smiled and pointed at the clock, 'The night is still young John, the night is still young.'

...

Lillian was over at the buffet table, finally alone, so I decided to try again.

'I'll be back.' I told John, not waiting for an answer I walked swiftly over to her.

'Good evening Lillian.' I greeted.

She turned quickly, startled, when she saw who it was she smiled, 'Hello again, Edward.'

'How do you like the music?' I asked.

'Clair de Lune is great.'

'Hm, so surely, you cannot deny me a dance to such a 'great' song?'

She giggled, 'OK Edward, you win.' She placed her hand in mine and let me lead her to the dance floor.

'Tell me about yourself?' I asked quietly, once we were swaying to the music.

'I'm the middle of three children, my brother Matthew is 18 and my sister Violet is 14, I'm 16. My parents are Alexander and Victoria Everson. What about yourself?'

'I am the only child to Edward and Elizabeth Masen...I'm also 16. What is your fathers profession?'

'His an architect. What about yours?'

'Lawyer.'

'Is that what you're going to do?'

I shook my head, 'No, I want to be a soldier.' She fell silent, so I asked, 'Tell me your hobbies?'

'Hm, I enjoy reading, and animals, especially horses.' Her cheeks flushed a light pink colour, like she was embarrassed to admit this. 'What are yours?'

'My favourite pastime is playing the piano, my mother taught me how, I enjoy writing my own symphonies...about people I love, or things I find...beautiful.' I ran my hand across her cheek as I said this, and her cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red.

The song came to an end and she pulled away. I grabbed her wrist.

'Wait, will I see you again?'

She hesitated then sighed, 'I don't know.'

I stared into her eyes for a moment, 'Meet me at Green Gardens, twelve o'clock, Monday. Under the big oak tree.'

'I...I don't know.'

'I'll wait until two, if you're not there, well...I guess I will know the answer.

I lifted her hand up to my lips.

'Lilly? Where are you? We have to go now?' A male's voice called.

'That's my brother, I must go.'

I gave her hand a light squeeze then she turned away from me, 'I'll be waiting.'
