Stranger behind the door

It was midnight. Some weird footsteps passed along the quiet darkened road. The lights turned off after flickering. The winds died down. The world was in silence, except, except for the sound of a door knocking, and the creaking sound of a door opened.

What Elizabeth saw that night, she'd never forget. It haunted her, forever and ever, again and again.

Her story began one week back.

Elizabeth was a university student. She thought about how lucky she was to be able to rent this apartment at such a low cost, while she walked through the long dark hallway. The apartment was the last one at the top floor. She opened the apartment and whistled, 'Not bad!'

She sent hundreds of photos to her friends, and told them how amazing the apartment was. Her friends agreed with envy. She texted them till midnight until she was tired.

Suddenly, she heard some weird footsteps approaching which made her shiver, and someone knocked on the door. Elizabeth puzzled of who might be knocking, as she knew no one around here. This old place was only full of elderlies. Mumbling while she was about to open the door, then she heard a deep voice, 'Don't open the door'. Elizabeth froze; the voice was clearly a man, but in extremely cold and deadly tone. Curiosity flooded through her as she reached for the doorknob. 'DON'T OPEN THE DOOR.' The man was still calm, but a tangle of anger and impatience could be heard. Elizabeth was even more suspicious about the stranger behind the door. She peeked through the door eye and wanted to check his appearance. But fear quickly paralyzed her. There was no one outside but only the long dark creepy hallway. Scare spread all over her, she began to tremble and her eyes were full of terror. She managed to utter a few words in shaking voice. 'Who…are…you…?'

'DON'T OPEN THE DOOR. NOT YOUR TURN YET.'

Her whole body was shaking, she stiffly went to bed, her eyes were unable to close. She would never feel so terrified before in her life. It was a long and torturing night, Elizabeth only barely able to keep her consciousness till dawn.

The next day, Elizabeth body was cold with sweat again when she heard the shocking news, her neighbour next door passed away quietly last night. Neighbour's roommate claimed that she had heard the door opening at the middle of last night. 'What will happen if I open my door last night?' She shuttered as her thought raised. From then on, she had terrible nightmares, dreams that stranger knocking on her door in the middle of the night and took her to many horrified places.

A week passed, and Elizabeth suffered enough and decided to move out. She was packing from day to night as she wanted to leave the day after. She focused on packing and did not realise it was mid-night again. She heard a door creaking from next apartment. Frighten yet a little curious, Elizabeth slowly walked to the door, peeked through the door eye. Her face became pale. She saw her neighbour's door opened yet no body was there in the hallway. But she somehow could feel like a pair of cold eyes was watching her with amusement from the dark corner. Next morning, Elizabeth woke up by the ambulance siren. She knew what had happened and her eyes were full of horror and utmost fear. She took her belongings and left the apartment immediately without returned.

Decades passed, Elizabeth became an old grandmother, and she lived alone on her own apartment. She was very grateful that she had a wonderful life and her fear faded out while she aged.

On a rainy day midnight, Elizabeth once again heard the familiar weird footsteps and door knocking sound. She knew, at last, it was her turn to meet the stranger, the stranger behind the door.
