It was sunrise in mid-spring. The livestock meandered through the tall grass, chomping their breakfast while the hens pecked here and there. Over at the ranch next door, Jamie hadn't even risen to begin his watering- the village was totally still.
There, in the first pink light signaling daybreak, he watched the other boy. Blue waded through the pasture, idly checking for breaks in the fence. The ghost of sleep lingered across his face, giving him a cute annoyed look. Bob's chest gave a funny flutter as he watched the first orange rays glint off the boy's strawberry blond hair. He turned, and under the focus of those sleepy namesake eyes Bob felt himself flush.
Three strides later they were face to face, though he wasn't sure who had taken the steps. Blue smiled that little smirk of his, leaning into Bob's burly frame. The bigger boy wrapped an arm around his fellow ranch hand's shoulder, and without breaking the spell of silence they watched the first yellow blaze of morning.
