Summary: The King, worried about Flynn's past record of misdeeds, decides to test him...
King Reginald found it difficult to admit, but truthfully he didn't know what to make of the situation at hand. His wife was completely willing to forget the past deeds of Flynn Rider and allow him a fresh start. He felt the same way.
Sort of.
That was why he had put three jewels in the guest room of their surrogate son.
He wasn't sure what he would do if the jewels disappeared. It was perfectly clear that Rapuzel and Flynn- or Eugene, as she called him, were a package deal- there couldn't have one without the other.
Yet Reginald couldn't help seem to help himself. He just had to be sure.
In the mornings, just after Rider had left for breakfast the King would secretively enter his room. For two weeks the stones remained untouched- not so much as a fingerprint touched their glossy surface. Then the weeks changed to months and between his new duties as a father and the growing amount of time spent with his family, he soon forgot about them.
Years later a dignitary visiting their castle asked if he might inquire about the extraordinary gemstones decorating his room. Princess Rapunzel remembered that it had once been her husband's room and asked if he remembered any such things.
He did not.
And for that matter, neither did Reginald.
